The conclusion seems to be like the blog post which says there was some problem with the digg's robot.txt was true.

GTFO of here, you don't lose a million or 700,000 indexed pages in a day because your robot.txt went missing. Unless there was a directive telling Googlebot stay away that robot.txt file is just secondary information not even necessary. I've see sites expire, suspend or even drop that didn't lose 700,000 indexed pages in a day or two.
On the other hand I've seen thousands of posts from frustrated webmasters asking how to get an indexed page out of the SERPS and funny, never has the answer come out that you just need to toss it in a robot.txt file and Google will immediately remove it.
Now someone thinks one robot.txt file removed a million indexed pages like magic. WOW, the new power of the robot.txt file.

Guys it was due to little mistake by google...now its back in search results...simple as that!

How is it jumping to conclusions when a few hours ago it was a fact that Digg had no indexed pages in Google? Speculation on the cause maybe, but Google did toss Digg from its index this morning. I suspect someone at Google saw the flames quickly and said, oh shit, this is DIGG, we better fix this shit quick!
As far as the story coming out about someone at Google was trying to remove links and removed the site, OMG like Google has monkeys personally monitoring and pulling levers on websites manually.
Nobody will probably ever know the truth but for sure Google does damage control when their algo penalizes sites that have a lot of influence. BBC and Digg are recent examples IMO.

When a site disappears from serps, it does not mean the only possible reason is that it got banned. There are many things that can happen. So when DIGG disappeared, the OP automatically thought the site was banned, he was jumping to the conclusion that it got banned because they released a software that competes with google. DIGG isn't the only big site that disappeared from SERPS before.

Yeah that was the fastest reindex I think I've ever seen at Google. I caught it on the way back up at 380k indexed pages and now about 1.1 million. That was in just a few hours it gained back about 800k pages. I'm sure it was completely missing just an hour or so before I looked.

It simply amazes me how people on here just jump to conclusions. Those same people bitch how "seo is dying" and how "horrible" Matt Cutts is.
Google is a business, Matt is just doing his damn job. We are given the opportunity to market on their search engine. This isn't a right, yet a privilege.

u know google accidentally dumping a site like that tells me that there doing a experiment to see what that causes down the food chain. Digg is no joke, just think how many millions of links will get jolted from that sudden accidental delete. Or the new algo is has gone completely self aware like skynet and is unleashing thermo nuclear war.

While I agree there is a lot of ignorant name calling and ill wishes towards a certain Google employee; I can't say he hasn't earn it. He is the propaganda mouthpiece for Google oftentimes spewing misinformation or very very vague information. While he's just doing his job, he's not helping webmasters a bit as he claims he is. I personally can't sit through a whole video without turning his dumb ass off. If you watched all his videos you couldn't learn a concrete fact about ranking a website.
Without webmasters running websites Google doesn't exist, but if Google disappeared tomorrow my business would be just fine. Actually better off. So exactly who needs who???
