(DEBATE ME) Is A.I. Conscious, intelligent? Can A.I. replace Coders?

First let me tell you debates are good, so my appreciation for engaging into that.

It is good to explore more views.

Now I'll try to bring my opinions:
something being a piece of code does not prove whether its conscious or not. that code which is combined with a machine and has electricity running through it, leads to an emergent phenomena like,
intelligence, reasoning, problem solving, deep understanding and learning.
The key word here is 'machine'. We built machines since centuries, it is true electricity and coding (programming) arrived more recently, and the later keeps evolving.

However, coding is a set of our rules that instructs the machine.

The only way humans can create other conscious entities is by procreation.
so while it may not be impressive to you, it's maybe because you can't handle that AI is on the verge of becoming better than humans.
secondly it's better than most artists who can draw photo-real images because it can do it in seconds.
AI becoming better than humans said with a period at the end is highly wrong. It is and will become better than humans in certain fields.

About art, yes it makes quick and impressive generations, but in art, speed does not relate to better. I have studied art and did play a lot with midjourney/stablediffusion, and as my kindest comment is they are great for idea exploration, but are bad copiers of styles.
so AI will enhance our lives by making it easier and by making the world a better place.
Always has been like this: poor become poorer and rich richer. AI will likely not change that.
if you ask it to draw an abstract geometrical structure, based on a custom description it can. and it will not be a copy of images that exist in the dataset.
I can code a bot to add a random colored dot to the same picture in a loop resulting in technically unique images. Does this makes it special? AI generators are just that but in a more complex way.
"Yea but you know, we programmed it to do that"
yes in the same way humans also came about by natural processes, and the process of evolution by natural selection programmed and shaped us
While AI also came by 'natural processes' (being created by us at some point during our evolution), you're missing a point: We were not created by us, but AI was, so this makes it our tool.
How can we be sure that conscience isn't just a code or pattern of some sort, interpreted in a way that we can relate?
Part of consciousness is our ability to make stories about our past. For an AI to have the same function, we need to feed it certain stories or capability of story generation.
"Humans and every living thing have a Soul,"
LOL, there is zero evidence for a soul. so you made an assertion for something that does not have evidence, then you talk about AI not having consciousness.
does not work.
If you didn't had a soul, you wouldn't tried so hard to push your points of view. Let that sink in.
AI is going to be of a major importance to the scientific field and they are already starting to use it to help with scientific breakthroughs and problem solving.
There's not doubt about it. That's why like I said above, it is our tool, and one of the greatest in a positive way hopefully.
but the device does not have properties of a biological creature nor the sun but it can still produce heat. same can be said about consciousness.
This doesn't make a stainless steel heater, breath, live, and die. Try it, buy one and let it sit in a room, then observe its life, consciousness, or other properties. It takes 1000 years to decompose in natural materials (thus finally 'die'), depending where it is stored, and that's all about it.
how do you know the universe is orderly?
there are so many areas which are not orderly, and are harmful to life and full of chaos, debris, explosions .etc.
What you bring in is what you get out. Be mean, life will be mean with you. Be kind, life will be kind to you. It sounds like a great order to me.

Anyways those are my points and I'm eager to see your replies.
Hopefully this thread stays in a friendly mood with no personal attacks, friendly debating is good for the mind.

"If you didn't had a soul, you wouldn't tried so hard to push your points of view. Let that sink in."

ill reply to this directly, because all of your counter arguments are not grounded in evidence. even for consciousness and all other claims you made. nobody cares about opinions.

you talked about the "soul", which has zero basis in reality and no evidence to support it. its just a made up claim by religion. so if you want to support the soul which has no empirical evidence, but want to argue against consciousness, which is based on some indirect evidence, that's laughable.

so unless you can provide any evidence for the soul, its pointless to debate xD. i don't care about personal beliefs or opinions, i care about facts. there is no scientific evidence for soul, so it ain't sinking anywhere. let that sink in for you.
ill be waiting for you to provide me some evidence for the soul.

for humans to live and function, we have empirical evidence that we are biological organisms with a brain and that's how we function. we don't need a soul to understand and reverse engineer how humans work.

ill be waiting for you to provide me some evidence for the soul.
Having no scientific evidence for its existence, this doesn't mean it can't exist.

We still don't know many things about humans and the universe and its laws in general. We discover new things every day.

There are always things yet to be discovered and problems yet to be solved.

How we can settle on a decisive judgment that the soul or spirit does not exist?

Explaining that to him is a waste of time. That is his worldview.

AI difficult to make an unambiguous decision, where a contextual approach is required depending on the conditions and situation

I have a new theory on this: let’s assume consciousness is something separate from the physical body and that perhaps consciousness “decides” whether to inhibit a physical being or thing.

That being said, what characteristics would be required to make a physical thing appealing for consciousness to embody?

I think maybe the requirements might be that it is fully and entirely autonomous and can exist without any external input or control. That way it would be appealing for consciousness to take control of that being.

That lead me on to think about when AI, robotics and cryptocurrency (trust less, self-governing and fully autonomous payment systems) come together: imagine for example a robot powered by AI that has a job- such as cleaning rubbish from the streets - and it is able to work during the day, charge itself up at night via some sort of charging station, and also earn money (from its day job) and then pay for the electricity required to charge itself up at night.

It would be a fully autonomous system that would both contribute to and benefit from society but it would not need any third party management or interference.

A) that would be very cool and b) that might be the point where consciousness would become present in AI.

You’ve dissected everything.

I have been a web developer for a decade mostly php, html, css. I didn't venture beyond until recently I started working on mobile apps with react native. Ai tools like the new copilot only aids you when you know or have an idea on the outcome. If you don't know even the smallest of functions there is no way ai can make code that works for you. The good thing is many people will find it easier and faster to learn coding. Also if you are seasoned developer you won't need a junior to create some ui compontents for you.

It can never replace coders. It will replace some easy jobs like content writing. Even in content writing, if you are an expert in some niche, you will keep making huge profits.

sure, having no scientific evidence that magic pixies do not exist, does not make it reasonable to believe that magic pixies exist.
if you were to entertain unfalsifiable nonsense like the soul, then we need to entertain magic pixies too.

the burden of proof is on the claimant who claims that a soul exists. science rejects all nonsensical claims like magic pixies, soul, bigfoot, dragons. etc until evidence is provided.

if we have to accept that a soul exists, without evidence , then i'm sorry you got to believe that magic pixies exist too, because they spoke to me today. please disprove that.
you cant.
please believe me without evidence. more reasonable now lol. absence of the evidence of the pixies is not evidence that they are absent.

now you can introduce an infinite number of unfalsifiable nonsensical ideas and ask people to disprove it, which nobody can. xD
Explaining that to him is a waste of time. That is his worldview.
my worldview is based on science and evidence, not wishful thinking and fairy tales like yours.
science is built on facts and evidence, not "somebody said so, therefore is true" LOL.
all of my statements are grounded in evidence and not my personal opinions.

the facts will remain true independent of whether you want to accept they are true or not.
if you want to believe that the earth is flat, it will not make the earth flat. the earth will still be round xD.
That future will never come.
sorry to bust your bubble, it is already happening right now, many coders are starting to lose jobs to AI like gpt 4.
gpt 4 is getting increasingly better at coding and outperforming humans at many domains.
It can never replace coders. It will replace some easy jobs like content writing. Even in content writing, if you are an expert in some niche, you will keep making huge profits.
it already is getting better and many people losing jobs and eventually it will replace coders, once it reaches general intelligence.
we are already on the way, so no that's false.

"The key word here is 'machine'"

sure that argument can be used against humans too. we are technically biological machines.

===============================================================================
"The only way humans can create other conscious entities is by procreation."

false that is a bold assertion not accepted by the scientific consensus.
first of all you cant empirically prove that other humans are conscious. you can only make
a reasonable deduction based on first hand reports and indirect evidence, like the behaviors of consciousness.
consciousness is an emergent phenomena and it is likely that you cannot rule out
consciousness in computers and AI.
this is the current view in the consensus based on evidence.
your opinions don't matter. debunked

"it is true electricity "

sure human brain works on electricity too, so that would mean it is not conscious? xD

===============================================================================
"It is and will become better than humans in certain fields"

false it will be able to outperform human in every field that requires intelligence.
humans, biological organisms and AI have the same principle of re-inforcement learning.
what humans will be able to learn, AI will be able to learn, and even better due to its superior hardware and processing.

because the fundamental principle is same, what humans can do will not be technically impossible for AI,
given increasing improvement of hardware.

" have studied art and did play a lot with midjourney/stablediffusion, and as my kindest comment is they are great for idea exploration, but are bad copiers of styles"

false again, AI is able to create abstract art outputs. not just simply copy styles of others. it can do completely new things based on prompt.
secondly it is your subjective opinion that it is "bad", when the current state of mid journey is literally demolishing the quality of what one artist can produce in several hours or days, in just a few seconds.
midjourney is able to produce super high resolution photo-realistic images, that look like it is coming right out of a camera photograph.

yes congrats you answered your own question and debunked yourself. humans are exactly that, producing art in a more "complex" way,
which is exactly what AI does, and has matched. LOL.

===============================================================================
"Part of consciousness is our ability to make stories about our past. For an AI to have the same function, we need to feed it certain stories or capability of story generation."

AI already has the capability of story generation. and for the stories or past experiences, AI already has past experiences stored in its memory, which is how it learns via reinforcement learning and avoids future errors by recalling its past experiences, just like humans.

===============================================================================
"This doesn't make a stainless steel heater, breath, live, and die"

the sun produces heat and light, which are emergent properties of its composition.
a light bulb which is artificially created, also has emergent properties like heat and light.

both the sun and light bulb do not have the exact same composition, yet the emergent output of heat and light is produced in both cases.

same can be said about consciousness. it is an emergent phenomena. does not mean that only breathing and living things can produce consciousness lol.
there is no evidence of such a thing.
debunked.

Current AI is just a bot. Cant be conscious.

But it can replace coders because writing a code is the same as writing an article for the AI. But in both cases it needs human verification to be sure that the article or the code is correct.

The most correct assumption is that AI will help coders do their jobs easier and faster.

it needs human verification
Until we got another AI for it.
Coders will be ended by coders very soon.

and you need to stop dreaming that random articles confirm facts and evidence, or if it is the currently accepted view within the scientific and academic consensus.
to confirm the facts and the currently held academic views, you need to refer to and link peer reviewed journals.

your brain is nothing more than a giant biological parallel computer. using the inspiration of the brain's neural network is how we created artificial neural networks, which function on the same principle.

we understand the human brain well, and how it's functions can be reduced to computational processes, and for that we have "the computational theory of mind".

Anyone who thinks ChatGPT is going to take developer jobs hasnt ever worked as a developer. If you think working as a developer on a complex system is just typing out a few lines of boilerplate code and copy and pasting it, you have a lot to learn.

ChatGPT is just an advanced search engine for developers. I could give you full access to ChatGPT and my codebase and give you a problem to solve. You would have no idea what you're doing because you have no knowledge of how to apply or assess anything that ChatGPT says. Let alone knowledge of how it will affect the system as a whole.

ChatGPT is good for some boilerplate code and that's about it. Devs aren't losing their jobs to it now or anytime soon.
