Yeah I heard about this the other day. The family only spent $400 too. Thats pretty cool.

Very impressive, something tells me a blackberry wouldn't have lasted 2 seconds in space.
 
I think NASA looked into this as a means of slashing the cost of sending satellite parts into space but the program faced too many difficulties. The high speed jetstream, encountered by the iphone in the video, was probably one of them.
 
Ordinary people have been doing it since long time ago. News companies are lacking content and are willing to serve anything just to fill up pages.
There is no technical achiv here, since meterological ballons by itself fly that high. They just strapped iPhone and cam to it and that's it. They could have strapped a cat, a rat, a pot, a microwave, it wouldn't matter.

hmm, what if they attached a 2nd balloon with less air in it so that it could continue carrying the camera up after the 1st balloon burst

anyway, my initial impression on the title was that they used some sort of rocket.. LOL

I know, I know. But imagine taking your phone out at the bar and saying 'Here is some video footage I shot the other day!' and it showed the curvature of the earth. It would have been cool if they did it near an airport, on a clear day, and all you could see in the background were 747's zipping by!?
 
I think it would be a criminal offence to do it near the airport, and would probably be charged as terrorists :)
