Your friend's computer would have to be on all the time.

I'm sorry for the ignorance. But, is a residential proxy as simple as just leaving your computer on 24/7 connected to your home wifi? Is that what you're referring to?

If your friend's computer is set up to act as a proxy server you can only use the proxy as long his machine is running.
If you want to visit the site instagram.com via a proxy it works like this.
You send a request to view the site to the proxy server.
The server sees this, sends his own request to instagram.com
The proxy server gets a response from the target site.
The server sends the response to your computer.
Instagram.com opens in your browser.
( YOU => PROXY => TARGET => PROXY => YOU)

If the server is set up in the right way Instagram will only see the request from the proxy server not from you.

First find out which OS your friend is running.
For Linux tools check ryanfallah'shttps://www.blackhatworld.com/members/ryanfallah.927467/post (there is a thread on here about how to setup a server with 3proxy)
For Win there is a software named freeproxy, but I never worked with that
I have no clue which software is used for OSX.

Doesn‘t matter install docker on Mac, then run a preconfigured squid image or start with a nacked image. Publish port with bridged network so you can reach the docker container from the host system (your friends computer). Then add portfowarding rules to the router of your friend and on the Mac. Router -> Mac -> Docker -> Internet.

Waw.
Thanks a lot. That's a plan.

I must admit that I don't understand anything for now. I'll search for all of this.
If you could precise all of it it would be helpful,
if not, it already is :)

Well docker is a environment which can be used an the Mac „like“ virtual box or other virtualization software. After installing you can easily try out all different kind of software build into containers (databases, Webserver, bots, proxy or simple a plain Linux. See docker hub)

There are different kind of proxy software around e.g squid, so there is a image for squid. With one command you can download and run this image for example with mapped port 3128 to hostsystem 3128. on your Friends Mac a request in localhost:3128 will be answered by the running docket container.

Next step is to allow traffic to this port by others (you). Therefore you should configure squid (the running container) to use authorization.

Yes but what happens when the external IP changes, ISP routers change their IPs all the time, I tried some stuff with vpn tunneling but I get stuck somewhere in the process.

Well a old thread but maybe a service (Free tier) like dynamic DNS, no IP, ... will help you. You will install a client (or use a Function on your router) and after getting a new IP the client will Update a DNS Record with your actual IP.
You connect thru the Domain Name which is continous updated with the IP
