Creating a Website That Makes Money: Day 1

I was wondering about some ideas for how people build up websites to be flipped for a profit. I like the ambitious goal of 8 months. Will be following closely! Good luck

How to Choose The Topic of Your Website: Day 2

If this is your first time, start with the first post of the thread as I explained the plan there. I announced my goal, how the project is going to be and what will happen bla bla.

Anyway, today, I will be getting into the topic of the site.

I will be cheating because I already know what the topic is going to be. I am not going to reveal it at this moment (as I said on Day 1 that I want to have a jump start and avoid copycats). However, let me promise you that I will reveal the topic as soon as the site hits $500/month (I will reveal the site in 8 months anyway even if it doesn’t hit that number)

How to Choose a Topic For Your Site?
The one thing that I believe is most important while you are choosing the topic of your website is interest. Yes, interest is over-rated according to many but if you go for a topic only because you think it will be ‘monetarily viable’, you will suffer in the long run.

This is coming from someone who has built 50+ sites and sold a ton of them too.

Interest matters and you should not choose a topic that you hate.

Yes, you do not need to necessarily love the topic of your website but you better not hate it.

Having said that, there are a few key rules that I will be looking at while choosing the topic of our website.

Here it goes:
  1. The site should have room for growth (it shouldn’t be a site about a very niche topic that I can’t grow it after a point)
  2. The current top results on Google for the main 5–10 keywords of my site should have low domain authority on average (less than 30 if possible)
  3. The current top results should have low backlink/per page ratio (less than 30 if possible)
  4. There shouldn’t be more than 3 eCommerce sites on the first page of Google for my target keywords.
Now, I will obviously be targeting more than 5 keywords on the site. However, I want the top 10 keywords to have moderate to low competition to improve my chances of succeeding.

In case if you are wondering what is a keyword or what am I even talking about here, I recommend reading this guide: Amazon Affiliate Marketing For Dummies

This leads us to monetization strategies.

How are we going to make money from the site?

What’s the plan?

Out of the back, I have a few monetization strategies in mind.
  1. Ads (Starting with Google’s Adsense Program)
  2. Amazon Associate Program (Amazon pays you a commission if you recommend someone to purchase something from there)
  3. Info products (in the long run)
Initially, it will be Ads & Amazon for the site. Later on, I might include some other monetization strategies which obviously you will know.

That’s it for now. I will see you on Day 3.

Cheers

Note: I first published these day updates on Medium and now copying them for BHW :) If the format seem like a little off, you now know why.

This seems like an interesting journey. However it's not quite "newbie-friendly" as most of the starters in this business do not have a budget to run Google Ads. However, I will follow your journey to see where the road takes us.

Great journey, thanks for the info about earning from Medium and other stuff too. :)
Looks like you know you'll reach $500/month for sure.
What are the monthly earnings for some of your other sites? I guess something near this number...? :)

Moved to a more suitable section as this is a journey discussion
Thanks

What are your traffic sources?
I will rely on Google for this project. Both paid ads & organic. Organic will be my main source I guess.

Good luck buddy. I'm on a similar journey and started on 1st Sept 2018.
And I started a journey thread too to keep myself accounted and document the process.

Let's hope we both reach our goals.
Awesome stuff :D

Good luck on your journey. You should create 10 websites instead of 1. Drill enough holes and you'll eventually hit oil.
I don't think so :)

It can be. Read this guys experience https://thisonlineworld.com/2018/04/06/medium-writing/
$300 for reposting stuff from his blog.
It can be but I am not gonna earn from Medium. The goal is to earn from a website and post about the journey in medium+BHW

8 months is a very short period. Let's see, How it goes for you!
Good luck ;)
It is. I have done it in 8 months before but the time is different now. Let's see

A big thumbs up for you op :)
Thanks :)

Man, I have so many friends that know how to design and build websites, yet they work for someone else and get payed so little. I try to tell them about BHW and ways to do more with their skills but they are simply to ingrained or something, idk.

Looking forward to your updates OP, will link this to my buddies. Good luck!
haha. Cheers

Following, good luck with your plan.
Yay Thanks

Or dig too many short holes and never dig far enough to make your goals.
:p

good luck bro, can you tell me which hosting company you use.
I will talk about hosting on Day 3.

Good luck on your journey plz follow up on every month with progress :)
I will be doing weekly updates initially and then monthly.

I am not going to run Ads, I will be earning from ads (Adsense, Mediavine and etc.)

Great journey, thanks for the info about earning from Medium and other stuff too. :)

I have a portfolio of around 3-5k/month (4 sites)

How do you earn from Medium?
I am not going to be earning from medium. Sorry for not making it clear enough

Day 3: Buying My Domain & Hosting

We will talk about domain and hosting today. I know you all are familiar with the concept of domain and hosting but I have to document everything, don’t I?

Read on!

The Domain
You should go for Namecheap.

Period.

I have been buying domains from Namecheap since 2012 (or 13) and the experience has always been great. A .com domain will cost you around $10 and I know some providers will offer cheaper options on the first year (example: GoDaddy) but stay away from them.

GoDaddy will suck all your money on the 2nd year renewal fee. Namecheap will always charge $10 and I think they are the best in the market for purchasing domains.

Of course, if you have a better option, I would love to know.

The Hosting
My clear winner is Siteground.

Their startup pack (at the time of writing this) will cost you around $40/year which is great for the service they offer. Free SSL and some premium benefits with one click WP install and all those backup options and a 24/7 customer care.

Love them.

Quick Tip: Always buy the cheapest plan on Siteground. You can easily move up when your site traffic increases. There’s no point in paying extra from the go.

Now that I bought domain and hosting, it is time for me to design the site.

I am a terrible designer. I will probably go with Fiverr for a logo & I will use Themeforest or StudioPress for a decent theme that goes with my topic.

Let me take care of the site now.

Good to know about namecheap. i've always just gone with godaddy because it just seemed easy. won't be doing that anymore.

Khalid it's been a while. hope to get an update soon & following your journey

This seems like an interesting journey to follow, would be keeping an eye on it and see how this ends!

I actually just listened to your interview with spencer last week. Didnt know you were on BHW. Good luck mate
