If the keyword has a low number of searches you can expect a lot of dancing around. I've also found that any new keywords will experience a lot of dancing as google tries to determine your correct position.

Thought it was only me. Went through the backlink report and found 75% of the pbn sites that were linked got deindexed.

This is embarrassing. The rankings are gone again after exactly 24 hours.
The 301 redirect change took less than 48 hours to take effect. The penalty followed after about a week, last night the site came back to where it was and its gone again.
All I did was removed the penalized links pointing to the site after contacting the sellers, removed a few affiliate links from the site and 301 redirected to a new domain.
For now, the site has lost rankings again for most of its keywords but I am confident I will recover.

So you did 301 redirect, removed questionable backlinks, and affiliate links, and it didn't work thus far. In my opinion, everything points out to onpage SEO. Keywords and how you implement them. Can't give you any specifics yet because I'm still playing with some of my posts. Density does play a part in this equation but how you implement them and more importantly what words you use after keyword(s) is the second part.This is embarrassing. Actually, I got hit by fred too and still unable to recover. So, I am trying to figure out the problem by hearing public opinion.

One of my site was affected by the FRED update too, at first, I didnt do anything and I was waiting for a miracle to happen. After waiting endlessly, I added one more post to the affected site (it has just two post pages before the update) , and a week afterwards, my rankings came back to where they were before the update....

I really doubt it's only about on-page. I am starting to think the update was insignificant and related to overall website quality. Every affected site owner has a different story.
