This is it, I think. Long back, there was this guy Terry Kyle (he was popular, some of you might know/remember him, he has also owned a couple ) who used to do SEO experiments and reveal the outcomes in his paid membership group. I remember he used to take some domains and use his way to test whether some domain is inherently more preferred by Google as opposed to other domains, and then would develop the websites by choosing domains accordingly.

It's in the tech niche providing informational content, no ads he is just using affiliate marketing and it seems pretty good for affiliate because he has focused his entire website on 2-3 major topics and all articles are just variations of these topics only yet different from each other. All traffic he is getting is targeted who are interested in this topic, and most probably those who are searching for it are also looking to buy products related to the topic.
