Yes actually it's possible to rank with spun content.
I have a test page sitting at pos 5 for over 3 months with no backlinks. It's a low competition keyword of around 720ms

Any proof? You consider spun content a long term strategy for your website? Hehe, we're no longer in 2013-2014 with Churn & Burn strategy that would earn you lots of money before it got penalized.

Content is king... even he said so when he says that you have to create quality content, so content is very important.
And it's fu.cking obvious, you have to promote it. If you have the best product in the world and nobody knows about it then how are you supposed to sell it? so he's right there... most of your time should be spent promoting your content but the content should be unique and valuable.
Every king needs a queen... thus content needs links and mentions and so on.
