Finding domains with backlinks from other sites in the same niche you're willing to promote - do you consider this a big advantage?

Yes it is a big advantage and in some cases a necessity. There is also a balance between cleanliness and strong backlinks. (some times you'll find domains with strong backlinks but abused, and others you'll find clean but not so powerful domains).

You have to take strong backlinks with spam free blogs. Then only your blog will not get penalized.
