Nobody talking about SSL killing TTFB in most of the cases. However, SSL will be a must in the near future. For now you still can rank without SSL if your site is loading very fast.

SSL i just an added advantage. You can rank without ssl. No issues with it. Just do proper SEO and you will go fine with it.

You can rank for articles without SSL as SSL is not directly related rankings/SEO. But as your website is e-commerce related, having SSL will be good option else there is a chance of losing your visitors and customers.

Think about it, especially for an Ecommerce. Who would buy sth. from a site when the browser tell's them it's "not safe" lol. IMHO it's definitely a ranking factor as well.

Impact of SSL is not that much as compared to other things but it still is a factor that affects your ranking. Theoretically you can rank, but realistically you shouldn't. There are lot of things in SEO that you may skip or don't include and still you can rank your website or blogs. There would definitely be slight boost if you include it.
