Can you rank without backlinks?

It is not possible to rank on search engines if you don't have any backlinks on your site. Because SEO is the king of your site. And Off Page SEO is based on link building.

It is possible. I have done this myself. If your content is good, you will get automatic shares and backlinks.
 
I dont think you can rank at all. I created a website and was only ranked well in the first 20hours. After that my site dropped.
 
If your keywords are low competition and you keep updating quality articles then you can bring keywords from no-where to top 100 list but the keywords might need some push with some quality links to generate organic traffic.
 
Possible. Choose a low-competition keyword and publish high-quality content. To stay stable create some quality backlinks.
 
I’m pretty sure I’ve done this in the past mostly using high quality content (7000+ words) and on seo. Videos, images, made it juicy and informative enough to really reduce the bounces but at the end of the day, it all comes down to your keyword difficulty :)

Links are one of the top three factors of ranking a site in Google algorithm. So by not creating link, you will be ignoring an important factor and signalling the nil link to the algo. Though ideally remarkable contents should earn links on their own, practically we all should try to gain links to give good signal to the algo because our competitors will definitely try to divert the algo in their favour by link building.
