Blogging isn't dead, but it is harder now, especially after the updates. Content is not king, authority is.
It will take longer then ever these days, but if you have patience and build a brand, it can happen. But it's along game unless you use blackhat short term techniques.

If you're a complete beginner, I would say no. There's just too much to learn, and you probably won't see profits for a minimum of 6-12 months. Most people don't see profits with their first blog, maybe some small profits on their second blog and now you've been at it for 2 years. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster you'll experience every time Google rolls out an update. I know there are people who see huge success within their first year but it's very rare.
Building websites is not dead, but blogging and niche sites are nothing like they used to be. It's not easy being successful in today's SEO landscape. Not to sound like a doomer, but you are better off investing your time and effort in other areas of IM.
