To get your website rank you need backlink yes, but you also need good and quality content to back it up.

No, it cannot be possible to rank your website without creating links. Links is an important aspects for ranking on search engine result page.

Yes it is possible. A website can rank without links for a short while, provided you have a valuable content. But over time, you still need links. You don't want to fall behind especially competitors are coming right at you.

Yes it can, I've tried it many times. Most goes to top 100 and top 50. The best was top 20 with 1000+ monthly search. Keyword research & content is the key.

Without links (actually just one but nofollow so I am not sure if it counts) 2 keywords first 4K on #38 and another one for 15K is at #28th. The keyword difficulty in keyword finder is 36 for 4K keyword and 15k one is 33.
I might try to get some PBN links and try to push it into the top letter but for now would like to see will it go up without the keywords. As this is a new site pretty much with no authority and links. And I know sites with 100-200 + pages start rank climb even without any links. In pretty much any niche.
