Boosting post counts

Trouble is it's being abused, there are some who are using it to reach 15 post count and even higher by saying " welcome". Everyone can still genuinely say hi to people. Unfortunately not everyone uses the forum as they should. Isn't it better for post counts to show for worthwhile contributions than some just saying " hi " or using a smiley

It does sound like it'd make the account type much more exclusive, but the drawbacks make it impossible, unless the forum wants to go broke. (just exaggerating, there's still a big piece from ad revenue, but I guess that would still get hit as well as less threads mean less potential advertisers). A domino effect.

I've been making my calculations, the forum generates A LOT every month from these three channels.

Introduction section counts?? Deng !!
Why nobody told me this before. :p
I would be there all day instead of struggling to make my first 15 posts.

I believe 1 post count per user in introduction section would be fair.
There is no added value after that.
Short one liners should not count in any section.
Large quote with one line responses also.
It's a signal to noise ratio.

Making 15 post isn't a big deal at all. Let them flood some nonsense sections than useful ones. They shall do it this or that way.

If some one breaks the forum rules they will be warned or banned or whatever and if you don't like something get a life or gtfo and create your own forum.

Imo no!
Post count is total posts, not worthwhile/useful/etc posts. When you wanna know how many posts a user made you want to know the total count.

Why so aggressive? It's a point of view, so telling someone to gfo and start another forum doesn't really help
 
well least on the one hand they no where to find them, and its not hard to roll them back.
 
I have reported 2 members - and there are probably more - who have started multiple 'I'm new' threads in the intro section.

It seems it's not just people posting the same generic welcome messages that are the problem.

Edit: just reported about 5 more. I'm stopping now so mods don't hate me, but there are a bunch of members (or one spammer?) who have posted about 4 intro posts in the last week or so.

You can usually tell the one, as they spend ages getting their avatar, homepage in place, have their username as a service provider type name.
What makes me laugh is when a Mod picks up on this and puts their post count to zero....
 
1. New members' (0 posts) introductory threads will only be counted once - members feel welcome and they get that first post. For the rest, they need to contribute.
2. Other members' (>1 post) posts in the introductory threads won't be counted - why would they? They are all basically welcoming members, which doesn't contribute at all to the forum. This would also remove the need to auto-lock the thread after some time, because if posts don't count, members don't really have an incentive to post in there.
3. Auto-infraction to members who try to post more than 1 introductory thread in the section - you only need to introduce yourself once, if you do it again, you get a warning. This wouldn't affect normal users, because no normal person in their right mind would introduce themselves 10x for no reason; only spammers do that...

Flaws/suggestions regarding my ideas?
 
What annoys me even more are the spammy comments in other parts of the forum - especially in the journey section. I understand that people wish someone good luck, but some threads are 80% "good luck" and "nice, following"-comments - which gets kinda annoying when you wish to follow the authors progress.

I am new, so perhaps this goes against forum ethics - but maybe short comments like "good luck :)" should be awarded with a week ban or a warning. Just an observation. Instead of reading the authors progress in 15 minutes, it takes me 20-25 minutes just because there are so many irrelevant posts that are written only to increase post count.

None of the ones I reported seemed to be setup to be self promotional. Don't know if they were gradually trying to get post count up to sell the accounts on or what, but just generic usernames, posted when they joined and then every day or so after that with another new introduction thread. A mod seems to have deleted some of the threads now, but I imagine there will be more.

It very simple solution .

A person needs to only introduce there self once.

All you do is add that as 1 post count and any other posts in the introduction thread don't count.

Simple.

Anybody replying also get only 1 post count for replying on a single introduction post.

That it solved lol
