hey guys

ok this is the challange!

you have a niche site with 3,000 content pages. How would you best do the back linking with the homepage and those 3000 pages?
Surely for those 3000 content pages to apear high in G you'll need a few backlinks per each page! (atleast 8 - 10 links per page) but thats a huge task!

OR

Will getting loads of backlinks to the home page (thus giving it higher PR over time) be enough to filter down to your subpages?

How about some social bookmarking only on the 3000 subpages and lots of other backlinks to the homepage? The social bookmarking can be automated, but does social bookmarking carry enough weight?

adivice would be great!

yeah I would recommend that you build the PR of your homepage, that should give your pages 'authority" to be able to rank for certain stuff without the need for backlinks.

thanks Lucius!

Do you agree with me that social bookmarking does carry enough weight on its own to give to the subpages? even if its several links from SB sites. A waste of time i mean when i can be getting homepage backlinks...

Build authority for the site, after that put all those 3000 links in SB, get some 4000 blogs to comment on (split in more blasts) and randomly gain some backlinks on some pages(not all, random remember) :)

I think totally different from the above members.
I think you'd be better to concentrate on few keywords and their respective pages and bring them to the top of Google (top means position 1-2). Make sure you pick keywords that have significant traffic potential (exact match).

If your site is well structured then your effort will improve the rankings of close related pages.

Doing some bookmarking which in most of the cases will have 1 vote will give you little and temporary link juice. The power of social media is in the internal linking and that power only happens when a story gets many votes (internal linking from the users that voted) and other power pages that the story is on like categories and RSS feeds that show the top stories.

This is what I do with a site that has more than 8000 content pages and growing.

I agree with blacat for the most part.

You would need huge PR on the homepage in order for googlebot to crawl deep
down to all those pages. If the structure is done right, you'd have a heirarchy
of folders and subfolders that could be used as sub-homepage, if that makes sense.

But the best way is to treat every page like a homepage. Certainly, you created
a problem when you created 3,000 LOL, but you do not need to get them all ranking
over night. Maybe a 50,000 link xrumer blast rotated on 1,000 URLs would do it. That
would be 50 links per page.

Another vote for linking to the individual pages you want to rank. Google ranks pages not sites and while making the homepage strong will help the other pages I really doubt just linking to the home page alone is going to do you much good in getting your other pages indexed much less ranked. Think about it, Google sees a 3k page site but the only one with links is the home page. Why would it think the other pages are worth anything if there are no links to them.
