Search results feel less like a competition and more like a popularity contest. Big brands rank by default.
Forums dominate with average content. Meanwhile, smaller niche sites struggle even when the content is better.
SEO used to reward optimization. . Now it rewards recognition.

you’re not wrong. google shifted from “who optimized best” to “who looks safest to rank.”
brands = built-in trust. forums = user signals + fresh content.

smaller sites can’t win broad terms anymore. the play now is depth + specificity.
micro-intent keywords, topical authority clusters, and building brand signals over time.
seo didn’t die. it just moved from tricks to positioning.

IDK if that's the case necessarily but I am thinking the how authority is built has changed rather significantly. Back in ze day, you could build that authority mostly within Google and it'd be enough. These days, you gotta do so across the web with brand searches, mentions social proof, community presence.
Does feel a lot less like pure SEO and more like overall digital footprint optimisation.

I get what you're saying; it may be very annoying. Instead of thinking of it as a closed game, though, attempt to change your strategy to fit the present situation. Over time, work on creating authority signals, deepening your knowledge of a topic, and using platforms that already have visibility to send visitors back to your niche site. You may build recognition over time, even if it doesn't happen right away.

Feels the same on my end. Authority signals are outweighing relevance in many niches. Smaller sites can still win, but it takes stronger topical depth and consistent signals than it did a few years ago

Instead of getting frustrated adjust your strategy focus on building authority deepening topic expertise and using existing platforms to drive traffic gradually gaining recognition even if it takes time

I’ve noticed the same smaller sites often get buried even with solid content, while big brands or well-known forums dominate just because of authority and mentions.

Search rankings seem to depend more on brand visibility than just good optimization. Well known brands and large forums often get top positions, while smaller niche websites find it harder to rank even when their content is more detailed and useful.

Google is slowly shifting key ranking signals from backlinks to AI, brand mentions & branding. The push to forums is just for data scraping.
