There are WH services here, for example article writing. Getting good, unique content is white hat. What you do with that content might be black hat. If you edit it to your liking and it has value and put it on your site then that is white hat. Sites like Forbes and the NY times pay writers and they rank just fine. If you contact websmasters to contribute an article to that site and they accept it that is also white hat if you are not paying for placement. Be careful with exact match anchor text in these situations and find quality sites, not content farm type sites.
Marketing it through your social networks is white hat and even buying links that have a no follow tag is white hat. Google terms say that buying links that pass page rank is black hat so buying a link on a very busy blog is ok as long as the link is no follow. If you think traffic vs Ranking then you get a better idea of white vs black, you might get lucky and even get rankings by putting stuff out that people see then link to naturally!
There is at least one BST that posts an article with no follow to a pretty big site in the BST forum, it might not help with ranking but may get you traffic which can lead to natural links later. Press releases are considered white hat, its for traffic but be careful to use your brand or naked url as a link and not exact match keywords, that is considered an attempt at gaming the search engines.
