After the May core algorithm update done by google, from your experience so far, which types of backlinks do you think still work after that update?

Let me also know what you think about building profile and forum backlinks for seo purposes. Thanks

You should concentrate more on building contextual links and interlinking your pages. If you're building links, build the way you build before and write guest posts. Don't ever try PBNs if you're not building with your own money.

And lastly, social signals really help.
 
Niche Edits and Guest Posts have always been solid for me as there's a chance they bring traffic with them + rankings.

I can't vouch for PBN's, but I am testing them out to see how they perform, but it's still in its early stage.

Web 2.0s are nice to help push newer content to get ranked, but the content needs to be optimized.

This is the worst despicable thing google can do and they do it. But jokes on them all now that pinterest&co kave taken over.
 
I would simply say guest posts on high quality real sites.

By high quality real sites, I mean sites that not only have good domain ratings but are actually ranking for keywords and bringing in traffic.

Lots of such kind of links will always improve your position on the Google SERP.
 
For me, it's all about site structure and relevancy. Set your website based on the content and make sure you are providing value. Proper silo and internal linking is the core key now. Do some relevant guest posts from the top Domain. I follow the below metrics of AHREFS to get a link from any website -
  • DR 20+
  • DA 20+ (Moz)
  • Min. Traffic 200-300+ (without traffic means it's a pbn or a new website)
  • Check one-year traffic flow in case it has any significant drop in recent times.
  • Ref. Domain - 30+
  • Topical trust flow from Majestic (only if I get any deal from the general website)
These are the least metrics I go for a link purchase. My budget is $20-$30 for each link, and I make sure links from the existing content to save article hassle. The budget went up based on traffic and other metrics. I landed a link last night, which cost me $50 from the 50k organic traffic website. You have to know how to bargain. Sure shit, everyone knows now what is a guest post. Hardly anyone willing to give any free links nowadays. So the budget is the crucial point for link building now. And there are other types of links you can always try like Web 2.0, relevant forum participation, relevant blog comment, etc.

I do not observe any changes - everything remains as before. Links from comments traditionally work the worst. After the latest Google updates, it seemed that the links as a whole meant even more for ranking than before.
 
Any high-quality relevant links in the form of guest posts, niche edits and PBNs. The higher the page authority or domains pointing to the page with your link, the better.

Quality over quantity still is the way forward and we are getting great results with niche edits, guest posts as part of the mix.
