Today we had a fire down the street and it caused the electricity to go out due to one of the transformers being torched.

So, I hopped in the car and went to the closest place that has wifi in my area, a McDonalds (yes my cholesterol jumped 40 points when I pulled into the parking lot).

I'm sitting there taking advantage of free internet for a couple of hours and I see one of the utility trucks for the electric company pull in.

Utility guy gets our of the truck and walks into Micky Ds and as he is walking past my table I asked if he would happen to know if the electricity was working again on my street... he told me it was fixed about 15 - 20 minutes ago as he just left the job.

I got up, shook his hand, thanked him for doing a great job and let him know I appreciate him taking care of the problem.

He says to me, "You know, I've been doing this for 23 years and nobody has ever thanked me before, that makes my day."

Do a nice thing and perhaps you'll make someone's day which would certainly make yours as his response made mine.

You should read "the happiness advantage" its scientifically proven that random acts of kindness heighten your internal happiness baseline. In turn causing a myriad of other biological conditions that make you smarter, more successful and most importantly happier

This is so true. People like this are under appreciated and are not praised for performing tasks that we all rely so greatly. I make sure to go out of my way to say thank you to those who I owe my daily luxuries to. In business and personal life being nice is an integral part of being a good human being.

Whenever electricity goes out, seeing the utility man pull up to save the day, gets me so hot. They're great.

Nice work mate. Manners are free, and so often people
forget that in this life. All it takes is a couple of words of appreciation for someone's work, which often involves little effort by you- but can mean a whole lot to them.

It's always good to give people the appreciation they want for the work they do.
It may end up going your way in the future as well.

    Here's my reply to the title;

I just finished up a nice business website for a co-worker of mine and all I got in return was him saying that I did stuff wrong and he pretty much yelled at me. I put down 30-40 hours on it and I was pretty impressed myself. This was FREE since I work with him and wanted to be nice.
I let people lend money from me without them even thinking about paying it back since they're my "friends".
I also let other people eat my food, drink my beers, party at my apartment, use my shit and whatnot only to let me clean up and put everything back the way it was before they came. Every. Single. Time.
I try to be nice and say hello to people at work only to be recognized as a less valuable worker, since I'm not directly an employee of the company but only rented to work there. Cough Volvo Cough.

I could go on all day.

I wish there were more people like you around here, BHW.

I saw this from the other side this week --- out of nowhere, I got a LinkedIn request from someone from my previous professional life, whose name hadn't crossed my mind in literally 15 years.
He basically told me "Thank you for hiring me in 1994, it gave me the opportunity I needed to build a career and I just wanted to thank you for that."

If I hadn't had several wonderful family events this month - his email would have quite possibly been the nicest thing to happen to me so far this year.

As usual, right on-the-mark, BTB

I love stories like this, it's a shame people forget such a basic mantra when it comes to kindness.

Such an easy thing to do yet so few do it, kudos to you. My family has a small restaurant that just celebrated 20 yrs in business while many around us have failed time and again. Aside from a good product its the service and respect that we give our customers day in and day out. I see people every wee that I have seen for 10+ years. Being nice works! Patrick Swayze even said so in roadhouse! :)

I'm always nice to people but I never get anything in return. My luck just sucks.

Ah, but you are incorrect, Grasshopper. You get the knowledge and feeling that you knew you did the right thing.

That trumps a lot of things out there.

That's a great story BTB! I took the day off of work today but right about the time that I would have been off for the day, I got a phone call from a coworker from a different building - although I am familiar with what he's working on, because I've worked there in the past. He'd been working since early this morning, working hard on a very pesky network problem. I suggested a few things on the 20 minutes or so we were on the phone, and honestly, it just wasn't making sense.

I looked at my Wife and she already knew - I was heading in to help. My co-worker never asked - he didn't have to. I told him I was on my way.

4+ hours later we finally got everything working as it should - and we were going into the classrooms where there were still students, currently working on their local drives, but obviously missing the shared data-server. We told them to try the network and I don't know who was happier that they were able to access everything as normal. We then went into only other classroom still working and let them know the news as well. We had several students thank us enthusiastically and it made the evening worth it. Of course, I'll take some time off during the week as 'comp time' too... but it felt good to leave knowing that we fixed the issue. ;)

I'm actually about a third of the way (I think a third anyway) of a book about business life lessons.
