Basic SEO practices for newbies:

Which is the best way to post backlinks? For example, if i am ranking for this two keywords "online games" which of this two ways is better:

1. You can play free <a href="http://mysite.com">online games</a> at this site.

or

2.Free <a href="http://mysite.com">online</a> games. The best flash <a href="http://mysite.com">games</a> on the net.

You're probably better off most times using example 1, but you should actually do it like example 2 sometimes. Here is the part where I explained that in the first post.

...
Change up your anchor text. The idea of backlinking is to simulate that masses of people are becoming interested in your site. It should have some amount of randomness to it in order to look natural. I've seen a few made up stats on what's best, but I think a good rule of thumb is maybe about 45% primary keywords, 35% secondary keywords, and about 15% random unrelated like Click Here, and then about 5% just the url. The exact percentage isn't dramatically important, it just needs to seem like the linking is natural.
...

The specific percentages aren't absolute. I've seen it recommended to use primary keywords more often than that, maybe even as much as 60% of the time, and drop the unrelated 'click here' to less than 1%. The point is you want to change it up and be sure to make anchors with both your primary keywords and secondary keywords.

One thing that's important to keep in mind when you're using the example 2. Google supposedly only indexes the anchor from the first backlink to your site that it finds on a page. If that's true then you'd be better off splitting your example 2 into using "online" for some sites and "games" for others, rather than placing them as seperate anchors on the same page.

If i am optimizing my landing page is it good to put anchor text with the two keywords "online" and " games" somewhere in the content interlinking with other pages of my site? And which is better to use, the two words as one anchor text - <a href="http://internelpage.com">online games</a>, or two separate anchor words - <a href="http://internalpage.com">online</a> and <a href="http://internalpage.com"> games</a>

And how much time is better to use the H1 tag with the two keywords in it? Is it good to use it on the top of the page , in the middle of the page and in the bottom of the page or at the top of the page is enough?

Thanks!

@emil9216 - you should go look at some of the threads started by ipopbb. Go to his profile, click on statistics and then view the threads he started.

He's done a lot of empirical testing for many variables and how they affect your onsite seo. You'll find a lot of the specific answers your looking for already posted in those threads.

Is there any HTML tags I can use to force google bots to follow hyperlinks in my site? I am trying to index my backlinks and I have indexed site with links to my backlink pages but seems google bots not following them.

Emil, I just saw your post. By default, G will crawl every link in your site. It is more important that you don't impede their crawlers and that you're careful with your linking structure.

And especially since Caffeine dropped, it is even easier to get indexed. Pinging and web feeds are your allies.

Thanks for this thread Greywolf, very nice tutorial for us ignorant newbies. Ignorance can be fixed, unlike stupidity :)

For sitemaps, it works in two fold. We still need two seperate versions. The bots crawl the XML version but you still need a text version for your human users to be able to see. In some recent testing that I've done, having a human, text link list, with 2-5 sentence reference to each link format, it has not only improved traffic, user click-through, user onsite search, as well as authority page rankings in recent months.

First - GREAT thread! I learned so much from this thread alone.

I have XML and HTML sitemaps on my site. The HTML contains links to each of the pages in the site, is very plain and only contains the links themselves.

The pages themselves are named for the keywords they address.

For example - if I had a site about men shoes, my sitemap might look like this
Mens Work Shoes
Mens Casual Shoes
Mens Athletic Shoes

I do not have any descriptive text except for the link anchor itself.

Are you suggesting using something like the following instead?

Mens Work Shoes
We have lots of mens work shoes. Take a look here, blah blah blah mens work shoes.

Mens Casual Shoes
We have loads of mens casual shoes available. You probalby wanna look here, blah blah blah.

shoes.Mens Athletic Shoes
We have more mens athletic shoes than we know what to do with. Check out our sneakers and blah blah blah here.

Here is another trick I do to increase my traffic:

For a specific keyword/keyphrase, I check who's on top. I check their stats if possible and see what are the 3 top keywords their visitors use to get to their site.
I ad those 3 keywords in my title (or in a page's title) and also in my content, as close as possible to the beginning of that content.
I can double my traffic in about 1 month or even less, all depending on Google speed...

If you have that mustang site, you could do that for any items' page and get them higher in SERP and better traffic for those pages.

I'm all talking white hat here...

As a newbie, I think this thread is super useful - but there are somethings that require me to go figure out what exactly is being suggested. This process, which I want to do also, is one of them.

Can you please elaborate a little bit on HOW you do this? (what sites/tools are involved and what to look at.

If there's a thread about this, just a link would do.

Let me give you an example with the Mustang thing, since there is no tools needed.
You have a Mustang site, let's say, selling auto parts for Mustang.
And you have several pages in your site, selling, wheels, doors, seats, you name it.
You realize that your page about the wheels for mustang is nowhere in google. So go on Google and type for example " ford mustang wheels " and see who on top. Check their keywords (in the source) and title. Use those keywords yourself. Add them in your page and you'll climb the SERP for that page. Repeat for your others pages...

Make sure also to have some kind of verbage/article about that part. I like to have 8% to 12% keyword density in that text.
For example:
----
Ford Mustang wheels for sale
We do carry all kind of wheels for Ford Mustang. Those Ford mustang wheels can be purchase brand new or second hand. The 1960's Ford Mustang wheels is differnet than actual wheels, etc..etc...
----
You get the picture. But do not over-keyword. Let's keep them at 12 keywords for each 100 words or less...
Also, make sure to have the text as close as possible of your HTML/code beginning. I try to avoid left column for example, with links or advertising.
Get a free IPB on Ares to track your SERP position and work on your page to get to the top.
