Hey guys, I am new to SEO and I have a question for you. I understand that when creating backlinks, you can't have the anchor text be exactly the same on multiple links. For example, you should have your links as follows

The anchor text for a link is the text that appears in a browser for that link. In my above example, both backlinks link to the same destination but have different texts. Would this be a good practice?

I've also read in Google's SEO guide that anchor text should be relevant to the web page its linking to. For example

isn't an option, because the anchor text has absolutely nothing to do with the linked website. I also, understand that you should not use generic terms in the anchor text.

According to Google, that is to be avoided.

To summarize, all of this confuses me and I'm not sure which standards to follow while building backlinks.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Thank you.

Actually you should use generic anchor text (click here, read more here, etc) and the backlink text that you do not want to have that is not relevant would be a little different than that.

For instance if your site is about cars, you do not want anchor text that says football.

Does that help you some?

I can't post links here, don't understand why not. Anyways, search for Google Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide and go to the start of Page 17. Here is what it says

Best Practices
Choose Descriptive Text
Avoid: Writing generic anchor text like "page", "article", or "click here"

Google is the company that ranks pages so I see their rules as guidelines to follow.

Unless they're talking about links on your own website instead of other websites.

Still, I don't see how "Click here" is relevant to whatever content the page is about. And Google most likely knows that.

Forget that guide; it is hogwash on page 17.

Real life experience will tell you otherwise and think about it, do you not think it natural to have links to your site that say, "Click here"?

What is common sense? The algorithms do not toss common sense out of the window, in fact they put common sense into the algo on purpose.

Tear out page 17 in that book and see if it works for starter paper for your fireplace this winter, that is about all it is good for.

I'll keep that in mind. Anyways, this leads me to a more important question. I've read from this forum that it is important to vary the anchor text in your backlinks. You don't want to use the exact same anchor text for all of your backlinks. Doing so might raise suspicion in Google. So my question involves how much you should vary your backlinks.

Say you bought 100 backlinks, obviously if all 100 of them had the same anchor text, it would look fishy. But could you have the first 10 backlinks say something "Click here" and the next 10 say "read more", and the next 10 say "According to XYZ" etc, etc.

That would mean only 10 links are unique with 90% of the text regurgitated. Would that be OK or would that be suspicious?

That would be fine but I would never give a % out as to how many of what kinds of anchor text/naked urls/etc because that could lead to a whole armada of people doing the exact same thing and there would be a problem then in Google's eyes.

I think you may be overthinking the whole thing a little bit. Do what makes sense; in fact when I build my sites and backlinking, I try and think like a teen age girl... typically they do things a little bit different and are quite random in their thinking and actions. The same applies to my SEO, be random, don't do the same thing over and over, stay away from hard core percentages and just build my sites and backlinks and let the good times roll.

If you wanna rank a site quickly with blackhat method, you might need to build as many backlinks as possible. In this case, there must be tons of backlinks NOT related to your niche. It is allowed! But if you wanna keep your site clean and make your money site like a "brand",then you need to build the backlinks carefully and avoid the un-related contented backlinks.

Most people recommend10% or less for exact match anchor text an 90% for generic, phrase-match, branded, and url anchor texts, with the majority being branded and url anchor texts. However, do as BassTrackerBoats advised above. It's the best advice anyone can give you regarding this.

Hi SEO Power,

just wondering, what is exact match anchor text?

Regarding to on this problem follow this rate

Target kws =30%
2nd Target kws = 30%
Naked kws = 20%
Generic = 20%

use LSI, domains, exact anchors.. this will give you best boost.

Just don't repeat yourself like all the SEO automation tools do.
You can create 1000 automated links with the same anchor like "cheap shoes".
Doing them by hand is another story, but you have control over what anchors you choose and here you can do almost anything you wish. The best would be to make up a nice mix like all normal persons would do when they talk about your website in the web.

5% exact keyword
10% Brand
10% exact keyword plus other words
25% URL
33% LSI's
And the rest random sentences that relate to text.

Do diversified link building. Totally agree with @ThopHayt. The numbers can slightly vary though.
