Something tells me this isn't even a serious inquiry at all. I haven't heard one reputable person ever say backlinks aren't important, except for those who were not in the SEO game. If you have social media traffic, or an alternate traffic stream such as offline marketing, PPV/PPC, etc... then backlinks are completely irrelevant.

If your question is are backlinks important in SEO - then you should just stop asking questions altogether. You have on-page factors, and off-page factors to optimize for ranking purposes, and backlinks remain the largest direct impact to organic off-page SEO value. If someone said something different, then they must want you to buy their solution.

Next you'll ask if water is a critical ingredient to "boiling water."

2) re-read before posting (I missed an "i" here the first time)
3) post, then re read after posting, edit if necessary.
4) keeps the forum threads pretty :)

Backlinks are important, but not as effective as they used to be as people have mentioned.
 
Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks. "Quality" is more important than "Quantity". Because "Quality plays an vital role than Quantity".
 
it's more newspaper and social media backlinks lately
 
In my experience Without backlinks you can never expect your page in top 100, forget page 1.. Ya some keywords are easy to rank and will put you in page 2 or 3 without backlinks, but then again you will need some backlinks to push it to page 1.. or your competitor can easily outrank you.

Yes, backlink is matter the most in SEO and it's the backbone of it.. Quality backlinks on HQ sites will bring you good results in ranking.
 
From the moment that your page is optimized it starts ranking by itself. Then some few quality links are enough.
 
Backlinks + on page + seo optimised content+ social links works for me

Yep mate, they are still important. But the way how and where to place them changed, but already about three years ago. Check Google or this BHW for more information ;)
