I was wondering how URL shortening services such as TinyURL are affecting your SEO efforts. Are the links as powerful as direct links? Less powerful? Or are there any nuances I should be aware of when using these?
If it's a 301 redirect it's almost as powerful (a bit of the link juice is lost during the redirect), if it's some other stuff like a 302 or 307, then it's useless.
bit.ly works by issuing a "301 redirect": a technique for making a webpage available under many URLs. When you shorten a link with bit.ly, you are redirecting a click from bit.ly to the destination URL. A 301 redirect is the most efficient and search engine-friendly method for webpage redirection, and is what bit.ly uses. Because bit.ly doesn?t re-use or modify links, we consider our redirects to be permanent.
