[ASK] How do people get backlinks from reputable domain with invisible text?

Hello I'm very much new here. Both in SEO and in BHW. Please let me know if i'm offending any violations rule as im trying my best to learn and contribute what i can. As for now, i'm humbly asking for enlightment to what i'm looking at. Here is the case.

Currently i'm working on a specific, online, and niche field. Finding out competitors and their marketing strategies aren't hard. My current analysis tool provided by the company is only Ahrefs. The thing is, 60% of their backlink comes from reputable websites which doesnt allow user to submit such backlinks. The backlink source website im mentioning include government, academic, and mass media. From page inspections i've found out that theyre using "style display none" and put them on the very bottom.

The question is:
- Which is more possible, them owning those referring page or hacking?
- What is the method used to insert invisible backlinks on a website? Is it done to the wordpress, or to the web-host server?
- How to prevent such method if i own a website?

Any kind of answer would be much appreciated, as i am eager to learn anything. All i could say for now is thank you in advance.

Hacklinks. You can find some expoits for popular scripts like WordPress and such. You can also buy exploits from zeroday sites. Just curious, is your niche Social Media related?

Thanks for the answer. I'm going to look it up to learn what they are and how to beat the competition. As for my field, let's say it's something not allowed by authority, involving games and such.
