I remember good old days that we can do both BH and WH SEO and rank very easy and fast. I did even outrank billion pound companies on their main keywords for years but all those updates came and now we need to be more clever to outsmart the search engine giant.

Machine-learning that google spends billions helps them improve the algorithm. I wonder if this create more opportunities for us or making our life more difficult as SEO. I am still searching and using BH methods within google's penalty limits.

Do you think BH still good way to go for long term success?

Payday loans for 2 weeks on #3 is long term for me :D
Congrats, I was on these results recently, 2-3 of the first page results was BH obvoious.. Until google finds a way to stop. U r right, "car insurance" or "payday loans" 1-2 weeks is enough to earn you a living for months.

Why are people so keen on 'payday loan'? Sure, it's easy to sell the leads, and they sell for lots - but I would make the point that 20 of my 'boring' sites combined make just as much as ranking for payday loan, and it's a damn walk in the park to rank those boring sites - competition is almost zero, and nowhere near manual-review territory.

So... is it just a lack of creativity?

It is because of straightforward thinking, and high CPC and CPA value. If not secret could u give some example of your "boring" niches. I do earn good with travel niche which is not boring and easy to get visitors, people want to explore and read about holiday resorts.

I agree with Tony D, there are plenty of other niches to explore outside of Payday Loans, that are very lucrative. Moreover, it's much easier dominate those other niches with BH tactics IMHO.

I would also tend to agree with tony_d, there are plenty of niches out there, why have people been so obsessed with insurance and loans.

Payday loans is not the only loan related high payout keyword either ;)

As a former BH SEO who now have changed his focus, I would say yes, it HAS become more difficult, and it's not getting easier. Personally I would see BH SEO as a short-term solution for generating money to pump into long-term projects. If you happen to stumble on a BH technique that works well, it's easy to become complacent and lazy and trick yourself that it will last, but it won't.

no offence mate but dont you think if you're asking him this question and if you were really outranking a billion dollar website; that something from G clearly needed to be fixed?

I would argue that from a purely pragmatic approach and my own experiences, it's getting easier to do Black Hat SEO than it's been in the last 3-4 years.

I also like BH more now than before! And I totally agree with d tommy up there. Millions of great Niches out there that brings a lot of money :-)

BH is still alive and working perfectly for me. It is all about choosing a niche which don't have dead hard competition and basically. Google dont give a fuck about those niches. Any niche that can make them money via AdWords they will make sure they do manual inspection of serps on that.

Choose niches that are not that much mainstream and you will do good.

Google has so much money that they just don't know what to do with it. I guess a feeling that they are looking to get into consumer robots after the acquisition of Nest and the one's that followed after it.

Surely they did fix it. I lost ranking after penguin + updates. I wasn't prepared or experienced enough to deal with it. Now like every other veteran IM warrior I am ready to take google's slaps and let them drop my rankings with back-up sites and plans.

That's a good way to hide from other envious competitors eyes as well, looks more amatourish that google wants us to do. many small sites instead of one big site on heavily competitive money keywords.

what would be one example of a niche that is ignored by most but can still turn a profit for you?
