But this shake up in Serps wasnt BERT related. Why does everyone keep saying its BERT. John Mueller himself said drops in rankings where probably related to another update that hit on the 7th, not BERT.Hello BHW! Just a few notes on BERT based on published info and my own work.
My trackers have seen significant movement in some areas. Certainly in areas with lower quality content. Everything you could ever want to know about BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is freely available; Google open-sourced it!
It is a natural language processing (NLP), pre-trainer. Pre-training is a technique for preparing machine learning data in advance and then tuning it when you implement it within a system, as opposed to training/teaching your system from scratch).
It has a variety of potential applications with specific strengths in language disambiguation: figuring out what people want (query interpretation) and figuring out what people mean (website content interpretation).
So, in Google's own words they developed BERT out of their work with transformers (language models that look at the way individual words relate to word groups like sentences, etc.). Google also states that about 10% of queries will be affected however I suspect that the actual figures will be much higher especially over time (its machine learning tech and it's going to keep learning).
My own experiments with BERT have proven fruitful; especially in terms of personal applications like internal search engines across knowledgebases.
SEO Takeaways:
- This update means greater accountability for content quality: focus on sound grammatical structure and sentences that communicate clearly!
- This update also means better-targeted traffic: so revisit your core keyword research and look at those conversion-ready searches!
- Also in regards to keyword research, it's worth taking a look at your core concepts from scratch to see if any new search phrases are showing up as worthy targets for optimization.

Can you please tell me the name of this tool?I won't complain
Thanks Vig. This makes perfect sense. i can see for one thing at least, have some photo galleries and a way to entice people to click though it. Maybe some Youtube related video embeds will help as well.when Google can see all page activity like heatmaps, getting someone to click is the most important thing to optimize for justlook at any recipe site, you can't get a recipe till you click something on the page they are the leaders in this!
Take a look at this: https://www.hgtv.com/design/make-and-celebrate/handmade/dollar-store-hacks-pictures
This is happening all the time especially when you have tiny sites ranking over brands
Being that he said something else last time they asked a similar question I am gonna call bullshit on that.It looks like part of the November update was related to links:

Those of you who lost traffic might try to clean up the links and see if there is an improvement. If the video he specifically talks about unnatural links via recommendation widgets and goes on saying ".. other link building tactics..."
agree, I think the new update is about backlink..It looks like part of the November update was related to links:

Enough sites to tell you it's not links that are the cause. I have seen websites with ipsum lorem text still in their home page get on first place in ranking for several hours in a day this month.
Hell if anything it seems like websites with bad links are doing better all of a sudden.
Google messed up, and won't at least admit they have messed up. Some results in the European health niches are actually dangerous websites with bad info.
