Hey guys,

I was wondering if pop-up/pop-under ads are effective?
I am looking for some cheap ways to advertise my website and I would be happy to get a conversion rate of 0.1% with these ads.

I couldn't find much info about the effectiveness of these ads on google.

Well they sure are effective in pissing the user off.
I agree to that, but still there is a reason why some advertisers are using these ads. I've seen aliexpress using pop-under ads on some websites

well those are pretty annoying as they are..
but i guess a giant like aliexpress don't mind bout that
everybody's gotta buy something from them at some point in life :)

Look at how facebook places ads if you want 0.1% ... They sure know what thay're doing.

Aliexpress is not using the ads, those are Aliexpress affiliates. You go to any torrent or streaming movie site and an Aliexpress affiliate window pops up at some point and I doubt anyone goes shopping there after downloading Brazzers episode 2507.

hmm , I used to think why does aliexpress use such ads :D this makes sense

Pop up ads are great if you know what you're doing.

They are not good for advertising websites tho.

yes it is very efffective, making over 20K$/month doing it .... you just gotta do it right...

What we all know is clear, users don't like pop-up ads and it's so annoying. Not a good solution to advertise your website.

they are doing cookie stufing

Don't do it.

Pop-ups came out of the '90s when dot-com startups ran on eyeballs and their only revenue came from online advertising. Of course, expensive ad placement pricing was harder and harder to justify when impressions and clicks were wanting. Dot-coms needed the money to survive. So pop-up ads were born. And impressions went through the roof. For a couple years it was a great hack for dot-coms to keep only revenue source flowing.

Geocities comes to mind as I know the CTO there and he let me in on the story about how he was one of the first to implement pop-up ads (and claims he invented the concept ). He didn't take company stock options though. Poor him.

Those years are long gone. Not only will you get less results than from many other other methods, it will also annoy and turn off many customers who otherwise would've purchased.

They are pretty much the cheapest form of traffic for advertisers. It is low quality, but at least it's human traffic and when you got humans viewing your page, there is always a small percentage you can convert.
And for publishers, they usually pay a fixed amount per impression so it's steady income (unlike AdSense, Cpa, etc. which may vary alot)

Why not try a stationary banner ad or a sidebar ad? Less likely to annoy users. If you really want to stick with some type of pop-up i'd try exit-intent ones. I personally use them. I feel they are less annoying but also give a final "appeal" to get what you need. If i'm on a site and about to leave and the ad pops up - it doesn't stop me from leaving so it doesn't really bother me. Compared to having a pop-up take 5 seconds to load before I can read the content when I was in the middle of a sentence, now that is annoying. I'd avoid pop-unders at all cost because those just seem spammy and are a great way to piss people off, not get conversions.

I think pop up ads are effective only if you know what you are doing.Anyway for advertising websites its worthless.

If you know what you're doing, they might be useful. Concerning your conversion rate, 0.1% doesn't mean much. Is it .1 visiting your site? .1 clicking? .1 subscribing? .1 paying?

You'll need to pick the niche, the good website. It's a real job, not just a way to throw money and get back some more.
