Are image sites still profiatble?

I wanted to start up an image site like 9gag but with inspirational quotes I come up with and funny images from time to time. So I'm asking anyone with experience making a site like this, if it was profitable or not? Is it worth it to invest in a site like this now?

I think the only one that can answer this is you, If its something you WANT to do.. then do it. Be a leader and MAKE it profitable. Over time, If you keep it going, make it nice, functional, responsive and get quality traffic... then why couldn't it be profitable....

If you planing on just dumping some script onto a host with the same template re-washing a ton of images and expect instant gains... then you are looking at it in the wrong way. IMO

Try to add a meme generator and initiate memes in your niche or around new trends.
Right now the theme around Jon Snow is hot, so take a screenshot with Jon Snow and start creating memes around it, then let other people create memes with Jon Snow. They create content and distribute it for you.
