The people on this forum ruined this method bro. Years ago it used to be you could contact a few schools and they would all link to you. You could easily get 15 scholarship backlinks and that would push you to #1
Now
1) the schools are not answering
2) if they do answer, they say "sorry, we are no longer posting scholarships on our website
3) if they do post, the page already has 200 OBL so it's useless
to answer your question, no, edu links are not as valuable as once thought.

if it's from some weird school in hawaii with DA 40 forget it
google is not going to freak out just because you got .edu backlink

The TLD doesn't matter.
.edu links are good to acquire because they have a lot of authority built up from being a real and actual resource. The domains have a lot of link equity to spread around, just like any good resource.
So yes, it could be a good link. But beware that it might not be that valuable if the link is not relevant/contextual to your page. But if the level of effort is low, you might as well do it.

.gov and .edu links almost gets same authority from google.
IMO - .edu and .gov still works good , Thing is majority of the folks in here create .edu links in a spam-my manner. You see them making profile links and call it .edu links. I've worked with editorial links and it's comes good in SERP. You don't want to make thin contents and outbound to your website.

Yes, it's valuable for your website back links natural diversity but you must go for real quality .edu back links
