Are edu links still valuable in 2017?

I've been debating whether or not I should acquire a backlink from the sub-domain of a well-established edu site. The main domain has millions of backlinks, high TF, CF, and DA. However, the sub-domain has no backlinks and the TF and CF are 0 but the DA is exactly the same as the main domain. Would it be valuable to acquire a backlink from the sub-domain of this site? Or will it be a waste of time and money? Please let me know your thoughts on this?

They were probably never inherently worth anything.

There's perhaps a correlation between links from EDU sites being useful, specifically if you can get links within articles/actual pages, but terrible comment/forum GSA (or manual) spam isn't magically better because the TLD is .edu.

Even if it's .edu, if TF and CF are 0, then it's pretty much worthless. Of course, it has some value, but it depends if it's smart investment (if you are purchasing link) or not.

If the price is low, then I would most probably purchase the link on that page and try to rank their page in order to increase TF and CF.

edu links are supposed to provide trust, so if the page is not hyper-spammed, there is no need to pass on a good edu link; metrics are not relevant in this case.

Decent for diversity, but nothing to kill for really.

I agree with this. Would even generalize to this / to all links in general:

edu links are supposed to provide trust, so if the page is not hyper-spammed, there is no need to pass on a good edu link

Edu links have been spammed to DEATH with all those scholarship link campaign.
Would you like to have a backlink from site that points to dozens spammy affiliate sites?

It has some value. Google believe in signals from third-party platforms. So edu links are trust worthy platforms with in articles.

How about .gov link? Is it also wortheless?

Yap, they are regarded as the most powerful link by Big G.
So get .gov link if you can as they are more powerful?
Another question, what if my website is in english but but I got bunch of .gov link from my local government which english is not the country main language. Will google penalize it instead?

the .edu which you can buy never had a real impact on my pages .... but its nice for diversity.

I've never heard google devalue edu/gov links. Hopefully they won't even after seeing this thread, LOL!

Anyway, there's a lot of advantages for this:
1. If they are hard to get, go for it.
2. And especially if they have massive metrics, then obviously go for it.
3. No matter if it nofollow, if it's #1 and #2, then still go for it.
4. If it is free, what the heck, effing get it!
5. It's good for diversity, even if they don't give so much pull on your rankings.
