Insurance. Alarm. CCTV. A dog. That’s about all you can do imho.
Also, have a little trust in people because if you have that opinion of the average person you probably will attract bad attention.
I have been to prison but I would hate for someone to judge me like that.

It's not about trust in my opinion. It's about mentality of our region. I live in same region as OP and I can say that least security is way better than no security. I personally know lots of small shop owners who installed fake CCTV cameras from AliBaba and never had any burglary afterwards.
We only have some small crooks here who are looking for easy money. Professionals (here) are going for cash and jewellery mostly, then art pieces. They don't have interest in tech stuff. Regular homes, shops, gas stations, etc get robbed by junkies/gypsis/problematic teens and similar.
One golden rule (and standard) pro thieves follow here: Never rob in your neighbourhood - go to Italy, France, Germany...

How exactly does CCTV stop burglars? By all means, they can wear masks, good luck recognizing them. I guess it's still better than nothing

Like I said it's about psychology of people that live in here. During this year we had about 4.3k prosecutions (official police force statistics) of what we had 10 murders, 100+ corruption cases, half a doesn't narco seizes (biggest one was more that metric tone), bunch of demolitions of bars, cars, etc (political protests against corrupted government), bar fights, neighbour fights because of wrong plant at balcony, etc. Burglaries are almost non-existent except for touristic (mountain and coastal) areas where people doesn't regularly live.
One small addition - There was no bank robbery nor money transport attack in years!!!!
Edit: Most cases are from traffic violations and corruption as people here love to drive fast and reckless and are also on lookout for new ways to fuck up government with taxes and fines.

Depending upon the wall construction around the door, you should reinforce the door jam and get a steel door
You are on the ground floor with a concrete slab, so buy a safe and anchor it to the slab with bolts
Install IStar T-7-SA mobile racks in your computer for you hard drives and remove them and put in the safe
whenever you leave the apartment.
Hidden camera should record everything
You are then covered for 99% of problems (theft, fire, etc)

Okay guys, so this was a good thread, got some good ideas. The only thing I did so far was to close my balcony with accordion shutters (i think that's what they're called). But it's not just for protection, I have other reasons too.
This stuff
So I put these on for a couple of reasons.
1) Protect my balcony from rain and snow (great for drying my clothes on the balcony and avoid any rain/snow hitting them)
2) Protect anything getting picked up and flown away by very strong winds
3) Protect my balcony from bugs and whatever other crap that may fly in or whatever
4) My bedroom window basically looks out from my balcony, and across the street is a house. The house has like 2 balconies that look directly on my bedroom window... my bed. Not all the way, you can't see my entire bed, but you can see my bed. I don't like knowing someone can sneak-a-peak at me while I sleep. Maybe it's the summer, and I'm naked, look away creep! And so putting these shutters is great because I get to create like a "foggy" area, so no one can see through it clearly, no clear field of vision. But on the other hand the shutters are sort of transparent, so they will still allow (sun)light to come through more or less. That is unlike those shutters that you close and it's like dead dark.
5) These shutters look very nice actually, and they're pretty cool to open and close haha
6) And of course, protection. Now, these shutters aren't really good protection. One could fairly easily break through one. But in my case this is made harder by the fact that my balcony is pretty high, so one would have to stand on a very tall ladder as they try to break through the blinders. And of course breaking through this would require some pushing/pulling/hitting, which would inevitably produce some noise, maybe enough for a neighbor to come out and notice something weird is going on. And of course as you're standing on the ladder and trying to break through the blinder, people can actually see you.
haha I just remembered a documentary I watched at some point about some black guy in the US literally climbing buildings and entering peoples apartments through their balconies. Because you're on the 3rd or 4th floor and you think you're safe, so you leave your balcony totally open. Well, not on my balcony you won't!!!
Now, since these shutters aren't exactly protection-oriented, they are very easy to slide open. Granted, you may fuck up and try to open it left to right, when in fact it opens right to left, which would mean you'd have to climb down from your ladder, move it a bit to the left or right, then climb up again and slide the blinder open. However, I plan on tying some rope on the handles if I ever leave my apartment for a prolonged period of time, so forget about sliding them open, you're gonna have to break them, with all the risks that carries.
All in all, I'm really happy with them.

You write well. ThanksA while ago I had a taxi driver help me with bringing something I purchased home and carry it up the stairs. While driving home we were chatting, and something was said on the radio, about prisons or whatever, and he made like a noise, like pff, and anyway he told me he'd been in jail before. When we came in my place, he just opened my bedroom door, saw a bunch of computers. I told him yeah work stuff, but I'm gonna sell the computers because it's not really going well.
The other day I had 2 plumbers come over, and I could just smell the shit on them. Just totally suspicious dogs to me. Anyway they were only in the living room, but they did come in and look around.
Recently I had a kitchen installed, that's 3 dudes that came over a few time and stayed for a few hours. I like 2 of them were cool, the 3rd one the little guy was a bit suspicious. But this may just be me judging a book by its cover.
Anyway...
I live in an apartment and I'm starting to think about security. It's not like I have 100 bitcoins sitting in my closet, but, I have a pencil over on the table and I'd like it to stay on the table no matter what.
Now, when one thinks security I guess one thinks of cameras. But first of all, the camera won't help if a guy puts a sock on his head. The way a camera would help is to deter a thief, however, it could also invite a thief because if you're the only one with cameras in the entire building, block, city, then that may indicate you have something valuable you're trying to protect. So it's a double-edged sword. I guess the only camera that would make sense is a hidden camera, so that way if anything goes down and the thief doesn't know there are cameras he or she may not hide their face, and then you got em.
Next, the door. That's the big one. I guess there's 2 potential problems there.
First is having a door that's strong enough and mounted in a way to where the strongest man on earth couldn't break it if he kicked it and smashed it with a hammer 100,000 times. That goes for literally ripping a hole in the door, or breaking it off on the hinges, the screws where the door is screwed into the wall.
The second issue is the lock. Now this is fucked because a guy that knows how to open a door can open a door, right? I mean I guess you can go all modern and do some weird digital fingerprint shit, but that also looks out of place, and that can be hacked. But there's no need to be paranoid, it's not like we have 100 bitcoins here or that anyone is out to get us (as far as we know). But there has to be locks that a burglar can open in 2 minutes by sticking something in the lock and pressing a button, and locks that a burglar would have to camp in front of the door for 2 hours trying to get it just right to get it to open.
Then we have windows. I'm on the first floor, but pretty up high. However, if you really cared you could get a tall ladder and have your buddy hold it for you while you climb up. Now, 2 of my windows are just windows. There's like blinders, then the net for the bugs, and then the actual PVC windows. So let's say the blinder is closed. You'd have to pick it up, and it's heavy. The net for the bugs is locked from the inside, but a strong push would probably rip out the plastics that hold it in place and get it to open, and once it opens it rolls up and stays open. And now you have the window. So the consideration here is, is the glass strong enough to prevent someone breaking it by hitting it with whatever. The second consideration is, would someone who knows windows somehow be able to open it from the outside. You know, break the plastic here, unscrew this screw here, move this little metal thing here, bada bing, bada boom, window opens.
Then there's the balcony. That's worse because once you're up there you're not standing on a ladder risking a fall that could break multiple bones in your body or even kill you. Now you're looking at the balcony door, and 1 window which is comfortably large enough for you to go through, if you can open it. Let's say the blinders are closed, you pick them up and hold them up. You rip up the net. And now it's just a matter of either breaking the glass, or kicking the window in by brute force, or opening it "intelligently" by unscrewing shit and whatnot. Here we're still talking windows and glass like before, except now you're standing on the blacony and can kick and hit and break things and work more easily to try and enter. One thing that I saw a neighbor has like glass that he can close the balcony with. I like that because it would make it harder for anyone to get on the balcony, but also for other reasons, like protection from rain and snow if clothes are drying on the balcony etc.
I'm not gonna talk about someone kidnapping you or waiting outside of your door to smack you over the head as you're exiting your place. That's a consideration, but that goes to gyms muscles knives guns pepper sprays zappers etc, and I'm not quite there yet. So let's leave that out of this...
I wasn't planning on writing such a long thread when I started writing, it just sort of got away from me
So what do you guys think about all this? Like, I guess one could call a security company and throw all these doubts at them, and get them to check everything and alleviate your doubts and concerns. However, it's like if you get a builder to build you a secret compartment in your house or an exit tunnel. You gotta kill the motherfucker when he's done, because no one can know. Well, if a security company installs the shit for you, they'll know, and we can't have that, we're not in the murder business.
So I guess the best way is to figure it all out yourself and install everything yourself. I mean you don't have to install it yourself, you can have a guy install your door for you. But he won't necessarily know your door is reinforced titanium whatever bla bla unbreakable stardust type door that will still be standing even if the building collapses. He's just installing a door for you. Or if you change the lock and you call a guy to do it. He's just installing a lock, he doesn't know it would take 10 super computers and team of scientists working around the clock for 3 days in order to open it without a key. You see where I'm going with this.
So anyway, the thread just keeps going, so I'm gonna stop now. Give me what you got?

And also, like when the shutters are closed, the balcony is just a tad bit warmer than it is outside. So I guess that's another benefit a little bit, you know.
