might be a useless thread but I have to tell someone. this pisses me off so bad. am I the only person in the world with this issue? I hate it when someone uses the phrase "anything like that"

"I am not here to offend you or anything like that" anything like what?

cop asking "do you have any weapons on you or anything like that?"
what's "like"? if I have a pen in my pocket do I say yes or no? is a pen "like" a weapon? what about my wallet? is my wallet "like" a weapon? how do I know if something is "like" something else?

"we are not going to post this video on youtube or anything like that"
is posting the video on vimeo "like" posting it on youtube? what about riding a bicycle, is that "like" posting the video on youtube?
if the person doesn't post the video on youtube but I see him riding his bicycle, can I call him out for posting the video on youtube? because to me posting a video on youtube is "like" riding a bicycle. how do I know if two things are "like" each other?

you know what I mean? am I making any sense?

I don't have this issues, you are very sensitive. Some people use this but it's not like they are doing something very wrong or anything like that.

In the above type of context, usage of "or anything like that" is normal and common.
In the "offend you" context above, "or anything like that" means : I am not here to offend you or hurt you or insult you or make you sad, etc. So, usage in that context is normal and infact quite common.

cop asking "do you have any weapons on you or anything like that?"
In the above type of context, usage of "or anything like that" is not normal.

In other words, usage of "or anything like that" is normal or not, depending on the context where it is used.

There are certain well known and accepted terminologies that I personally do not agree with. For example, a lawyer's notice sent, is known as a legal notice all around the world.
Why is a notice issued by a lawyer called a "legal notice" ? As per reality that is wrong and totally incorrect.
A letter issued by a lawyer must be called a "lawyer's notice". Only a notice issued by a court of law should be called a "legal notice".
In reality a legal notice implies that one has to as per law, comply with that notice. Do we need to comply with some notice sent by some lawyer or a lawyer's office ? No, then why is a notice sent by a lawyer called a "legal notice" ? It make no sense at all to me.
Hence, there are many well known and accepted terminologies that I personally do not agree with.

but how do I know "to hurt" and "to make you sad" and "to offend" are "like" each other?
what about riding a bicycle? is that "like" offending someone?
if someone tells me "I am not going to offend you or anything like that" can i assume he is not going to ride his bicylce? because to me riding a bicycle is "like" offending someone.
again, the question remains, how do i know if 2 things are "like" each other and if 2 things are different from each other?
is a tesla "like" a toyota? I mean they are both cars, but one is electric one is gas powered.
I don't get it, maybe I have autism.

i dont want to say i couldn't care less or anything like that, but actually i don't care.

No you don't have autism or anything like that.

You just overthink this a bit. People try to stay general and are lazy to elaborate their point deeper or anthing like that.

This is actually the first time I'm hearing this phase pisses someone off. Some people are just used to the phase.
