Anyone know how to prevent nosebleeds?

From Qigong:
raise your left hand over your head if its bleeding from right nostril, right hand if its left nostril, both hands if both.Arms should be slightly bent like: ) .

Nosebleeds can be caused by sudden change in temperature, e.g. from a cold sidewalk to a heated lecture theatre or vice versa. Also avoid taking Aspirin and be aware that there are a number of foods that can thin your blood, some of the more common ones are: Curry Powder, Ginger, Cinnamon, Raisins, Liquorice, Peppermint, Oranges and many more, a quick internet search of "foods that thin blood" will find you a full list.

Having said that I would have to echo the guys above that say you should get it checked out by a Doctor, even just to put your mind at rest.

Good luck, I hope you find a solution!

i used to have them all the time for as long as i could remember, they would last ages as well. then one day 4 - 5 years ago they just stopped.

Might be dry air... during winter time i used to have my nose bleed because dry air indoors. I solved my problem with Air Humidifier. Good luck
But i cant carry that around everywhere

Why don't you stop asking questions to members of an IM forum, and go see a doctor? Your laptop must be covered in blood by now and due to blow up soon!

As a med student, here is the best piece of advice I can give you:

GO SEE A DOCTOR!

Wearing a winter face mask might help (by keeping the air you breathe in humid and its temp slightly higher than the outside temperature).

Also, when it's bleeding, pressing the area between the nasal bone and upper nasal cartilage might help it stop. THIS IS ONLY TO BE DONE FOR SYMPTOMATIC RELIEF! It won't cure the underlying condition you may have (hypertension, tumour, etc.).

Again, GO SEE A DOCTOR!

Hey! I was busy with Uni (exams and stuff). Thanks for noticing :-) I should be on here quite often now (not as often as before, but more often than never :P )

I had this problem recently and it scared the crap out of me. My sister in law is a RN and said that there are capillaries inside of your nose that can bust. So basically every time you rube your nose or it gets irritated, it will bust back open. Don't touch it, rub it and don't use q tips. Just a small amount of touch can bust it back open. She sent me a nasal spray that lubricates it. Go find some at the drug store.

My nose was gushing blood like yours and it went on and off for weeks. It scared me so bad once that I wanted to go to the ER. Anyway, my sis in law said that it's normal (as long as you don't have high blood pressure). A busted capillary will cause thick blood to come out at times too. I just had to sit down bc it makes me want to faint just thinking about this lol.

Get an ointment called emofix. It stops the bleeds almost immediately. I used to have a problem with nose bleeds, went to see an ENT doctor. He burned one of the blood vessels on my septum with silver nitrate. I haven't had a single bleed since then.

Cheers guys going to the Doctors on Friday (1 week wait :( ), kinda crapped myself when i read the words tumour in a few posts above.

Please go get your blood platelets checked. This was happening to a family member and turns out he had dangerously low platelet levels (prevents blood clotting). The condition is called ITP and it can prove deadly if not treated. Please get yourself checked.

1 week wait? :S Okay

Don't be too* scared man. It could really be anything else. I used the tumour example to emphasize on the importance on seeing a real doctor (instead of asking for advice on a forum).

Don't be too worried about the tumour thing, especially if you haven't noticed any change in appetite or weight. If there is a mass, it might just be something benign that can be removed without any danger of metastasis. There might actually not be any mass at all. It could be something with your capillaries, clotting factors, blood pressure, etc.

Really, it can just be something very simple and curable/treatable. Don't worry too much about it. The doctor will take it from here. You can keep us updated if you want (I, personally, would like to know what's up).

Yeah terrible waiting times here in the UK. Thanks muscleteen, as always you enlighten this forum up. Hopefully it isn't something major, although high blood pressure does run in our family history.

Anyway sure i will update this thread as soon as i get back. btw iv always really had them during the winter times, the only time i had them in any other season was due to me being hit pretty hard through contact sports i play.

PS. How did your exams go MuscleTeen?

OP it sounds like you may have some medical problem, your best bet is to go and see a doctor and make sure there is nothing really wrong.
