Anyone here use persuasive speech?

1. How to win friends and influence people for starters
2. Just be a nice guy, don't try to manipulate too much, be honest - people feel when they're being taken for a ride.

Damn, had no idea WizGiz was into NLP. That's awesome.

As far as persuasion goes, NLP is by far the best place to begin. I started reading, studying and using it 9 years ago when I got into the seduction community. It's one of the most powerful skillsets any copywriter, marketer or salesman can learn.

And let me tell you something, it's NOT EASY to learn by any means. I started practicing it in the seduction community while getting my degree for psych. What I thought I knew about NLP back then, compared to what I know now, it's a night and day difference. It's unbelievable how powerful it really is.

You gotta start with the book, "Frogs To Princes" by Richard Bandler.
http://www.amazon.com/Frogs-into-Princes-Linguistic-Programming/dp/0911226192

Then read "The Unfair Advantage", it's a great book on selling with NLP.

Then read "NLP For Dummies". I really should have recommend this first cause it explains NLP in such a clear, concise and scientific way. It will put all the pieces together for you. And you will go back to this book hundreds of times for reference.

If you can only read 1 of the above, read the last.

And here's a good article that explains some of the basic strategies: http://blog.nlp-techniques.com/2010/06/17-of-the-worlds-most-powerful-written-persuasion-techniques/

The key thing to understand about NLP is that 7% of communication is done on a verbal level. While the other 93% is done on a NON-VERBAL level.

Most people think nonverbals only apply to body language. They don't realize that writing is FULL of nonverbal communication. How words are organized. How language is organized. Dropping anchors people don't notice. Or something as simple as learning to use alliterations in your writing.

I'm an alliteration junky. I try to drop them in a lot of my posts on here. Just to practice. My name is an alliteration. My business names are all alliterations. Alliterations are hypnotic. When you subtly season them in. Don't overdo, misuse or abuse them. You can mix in rhyming words like I just did. Another thing I do is reverse cliches. Maybe I'm writing something motivational, and I'm about to write.. "the world is in your hands". I'll replace "hands" for "pockets".

Why? It's a subtle pattern interrupt. As readers read the first 5 words they expect "hands" to follow. Instead they read "pockets". They don't even notice its "detuned". But they FEEL it subconsciously. It makes you're writing seem more original and less predictable. It keeps peoples eyes moving.

I also love rebuttals. Not just sales rebuttals but thought rebuttals. Presumptous hijacking. You have to hear your readers thoughts as you're writing. Certain claims you know people are gonna be thinking something specific, call it out to the front, reframe it. You don't do this just to lower resistance. You do it to gain control. And it's much more powerful to rebut things the reader would never expect. Like, "HOW THE FUCK did he know I was thinking that"? Those types of rebuttals are the most powerful. The obvious ones, not so much.

I may do a tutorial one day. Cause there's so many things I learned over the years that I never even read in any books.

I never thought to read from frogs to princes. I remember it coming up in the book: The Game, when the author was going through seduction training. The reviews look pretty interesting. I know what I'm getting for my birthday now lol. Just want to say thanks for this post and that it has been informative. If you ever do decide to write a tutorial I'll be glad to read it. There's book smarts and then there's street smarts. I want to know and learn it all.

@breakinBrix - I Just ordered NLP for Dummies, thanks for the recommendation!

@BreaknBrix: I know there is a thanks button, but I feel that I need to post this. Thank you very much for enlighten me. I'm hesitant to try nlp despite lot of people suggest it, but since reading this thread and your post, I'll give it a go.

And if you have time, please post your tutorial.

PS: I've managed to get those 3 book you recommend (don't ask how :o), should I share it in BHW?

i've been doing NLP and conversational hypnosis for 7+ years, the idea that there are magic words that sell is total B.S i write sales pages and it always take a unique approach depending on the quality of traffic, presell and the buyer intent and market sophistication. words only makes the speech flows naturally but it's how you appeal to people's problem that matter.

Jordan Belfort ftw! I love him.

On a related note, one of the things I remember from another source is that if you do persuade someone to do something, i..e follow me on twitter, you can actually convert more people by underlining it, i.e. "Follow me on Twitter here."

I am a professional copywriter, and I agree this is all just bullshit. Although they can definitely create certain frames of mind, and they are how we paint people into the corner to buy products - words are nothing particularly useful in absence of a concrete sales strategy ... but that does typically employ some "pretty" or well-written phrases and content. Just because something reads well doesn't mean it's a trigger word or forces people to take some action. The job of a copywriter is often to move a prospect from cold interest to hot frothy desire to buy, thus we typically use motivational words/phrases.

The reason I say it's bullshit is because guru types and/or (personality ethics) pushers always mislead people by leaving out that it isn't their compelling words that sell people, but much more their compelling personalities.(Frank Kern does come to mind, even though I still find a lot of his general information to be very GOOD)

What you need to do with copywriting is determine what action/actions you want your end-user to take, and then you need to lay a bread crumb trail that leads ONLY to that action. Sure you do this with words, images, sound and/or video and ultimately this is a sales script, but ... it's not magic. It's meticulous and carefully crafted to hopefully appeal to the largest cross-section of demographics an offer will be marketed to.

There is no magic recipe. Of course there are guides/templates and/or swipe copy, etc... But in the end it always come down to a unique vision of what will appeal to the target demographic. That's about a lot more than some clever words. The practical elements of well written copy always far outnumber the persuasive words, but compelling copy always contains some elements of motivating end-users to take action.

A book on NLP that I read a long time ago and still refer to today is 'The Power of Business Rapport' by Michael Brooks. It's focus is on B2B but you can use everything he talks about with B2C copywriting as well.

Jordan Belfort has some awesome stuff, Grant Cardone is also good, a pretty full on guy but I love watching his sales videos.
