Build a good portfolio first you can show off. Then be a little creative in advertising your service on given platform. And/or offer your service to people you know personally and have them hire you trough given platform to generate positive reviews.

Agree. Maybe use WPportfolio from the Astra / BSF guys, that allows you to even portfolios being websites. An approach, setup multisite just for demo sites and then from your main site each portfolio can link to your multisitedomain.com/site1, site2 etc.

Your page should have a theme and try to keep the color scheme consistent with the theme so that people know what you expect and what your account is about.
