Another Google update started - link spam update

At first, Google should hit websites using site-wide backlinks instead of other link building infractionso_O

NoFollow was good because we needed a function to differentiate between links, but we don't need rel="sponsored" only Google needs it.
i agree, i don't need rel=sponsord

I have been using rel="sponsored" in pretty link plugin even before the google update

LOL Ill get right on this!

Here’s what Google recommends for each type of link:

  • Affiliate links: Google asks sites participating in affiliate programs to qualify these links with rel=“sponsored”, regardless of whether these links were created manually or dynamically.
  • Links from sponsored posts: Links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) are to be marked up with the rel=“sponsored” value.
  • Links from guest posts: Links from guest posts are to be marked up with the rel=“nofollow” value.
I put my aff links as no-follow not rel="sponsored". Would you leave it alone as no-follow or change it?

There is a lot of contradiction here. If you read Amazon's "Associates Program Operating Agreement" point #5, it clearly states that you are not allowed to express any sponsorship between your website and Amazon. From the way I understand this, adding the rel="sponsored", as requested by Google, will be against Amazon's operating agreement! :poop:

Which side will we please?

Tagging Amazon links as sponsored doesn't mean you imply they sponsor you. Tell me you are joking that you believe sponsored tag is against Amazon rules because of this explanation.

I think the words misrepresent or embellish are for human eyes only. A sponsor tag is just a categorization, right? Only crawlers see it. So you aren't really misrepresenting or embellishing anything Imo.

I understand your point, and it is definitely 100% logical. But keep in mind that what might seem logical to us, does not necessarily make it logical to Amazon/Google.

I believe Google's choice for the "sponsored" attribute wording is simply bad and not well thought out. It would have been a better option, in that case, to add the attribute “affiliate”.

Google has created some confusion by lamely requesting us to have unsponsored links marked as “sponsored” while Amazon forbids that. (Again, I understand your point and I totally agree with what you said! But when you are running 50+ Amazon Affiliate websites generating 6 figures/mo, you should always think twice and make a very informed decision prior to making any changes that could have terrible adverse effects)

PS: I emailed Amazon earlier regarding this, and I just received their reply while I was writing this reply. They have confirmed that using the "sponsored" attribute is fine.

Hi,

Couldn't find a thread discussing this. If there is one, please delete this

Google starting link spam update and it starts again

https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-link-spam-update/414623/
I think that this time they are just trying to identify all affiliate sites and sponsored links... when their AI got all the info then they woldn't need anymore the webmasters to out rel info tags... same happened with the disavow... now google can know what links are good or bas departing from such info without you disavow them on your site.

Then that algorith update with the recopiles info is the one that will change the SERPs, for now all will be the same no matter of you do the rel change or not... in fact they say that is not necesary to change from nofollow if is what you hace now on affiliate links... later ofcourse the ones that will be affected are the sites that runs the affiliate links and that have been geting juice from affiliate links that were do follow like must ve the case with Amazon for example

all the affiliate plugins have started using rel=sponsored like aawp for amazon
