Another Google update started - link spam update

We have to wait for Big G to finish their updates and look at the final results.

I believe it already happened last weekend when I started a thread asking if anyone felt any fluctuations.

Now it is confirmed.

Oh boy.

Those who use PBN links may want to watch out. I also heard they are gonna go after guest posts and paid content (as someone here mentioned in another thread).

I guess we have to wait for it to settle down before doing anything. Good luck all! And stay safe!

The Game is changing.... o_O

LOL Ill get right on this!

Here’s what Google recommends for each type of link:

  • Affiliate links: Google asks sites participating in affiliate programs to qualify these links with rel=“sponsored”, regardless of whether these links were created manually or dynamically.
  • Links from sponsored posts: Links that are advertisements or paid placements (commonly called paid links) are to be marked up with the rel=“sponsored” value.
  • Links from guest posts: Links from guest posts are to be marked up with the rel=“nofollow” value.

This is not actually targeting spam links but sponsored links. Now, webmasters should mark guest posts, comments, affiliate links etc. as sponsored. This will help Google get rid of newbie marketers who want to rank without paying for Google ads.

My 2 cents...recently, they've cracked down on ads too, asking for verification and delivering lower clicks than usual for the same location and keywords

I will never implement this. Why should I, Google is not law that we follow whatever it says. Why should I not give link out for a guest post if the guest post added value to my blog.

NoFollow was good because we needed a function to differentiate between links, but we don't need rel="sponsored" only Google needs it.

It is Google's problem that it can't differentiate between natural guest post and spammy guest post, not mine.

This is Google taking its influence and authority too far.

#rant end

Ya poor google doesn't make enough money.
that's the thing with "successful" companies: they don't know when to stop, nor do they ever want to. If you give them the entire power in the Universe they will literally exterminate all life so that they can enjoy that power alone. That's why I am hating on these parasites with so much passion.

but we don't need rel="sponsored" only Google needs it
of course!

Should I mark all affiliate link sponsored link with nofollow or only sponsored link. And also all the others external link should be sponsored as well?

Thanks in advance

This is a very tricky situation.

Think about it - imagine if your website is an affiliate website with all posts promoting content and you abide them by putting rel=sponsored on all your posts. When Google bots crawl your site they will think, "Hmm... This website is nothing but promotional content. PENALIZED!" or got hit by algorithm due to website not providing 'quality, useful content' since its algorithm may think your website is just pushing promotional content.

BUT if what Google says is true (that they will penalize sites for not declaring sponsored links) then you will still get hit if their algo-bots manage to sniff your site out.

Sigh. This is really a.... "Damn if you do, damn if you don't" scenario.

Maybe... Just maybe... They are now shuffling the search results to make webmasters go paranoid and start making their posts rel=sponsored or rel=nofollow and everyone falls into their trap.
