Hi there,
I am new to this forum so please bear with me. I have a little problem with the ranking of my site on Google. It keeps placing high then dropping?
I have been in the web design business a short while now and relied on word of mouth for work leads. This year following a couple of health scares and work drying up, I recently decided to give my website a makeover to try to get work that way. This involved using WordPress and creating a responsive design. I also simplified the design to try to get better loading times but the hosting provider I have is not the best so sometimes the site can load a little slowly.
Anyway I have been working on my SEO to try to get my site ranked for no.1 for the keywords 'web design portsmouh'. I started doing this just over a month ago. I have been using Yoast SEO and also been looking at competitors back links and using them. Some were directories and some were posts on good PR blogs.
I have been using white hat seo techniques and blogging and using ethical link building. No black hat at all. Hubspot marketing grader gives me 74/100. I have noticed that there are sites that site on page 1 serps and are newer than my domain with fewer links and indexed pages. It seems a bit unfair to me!
I noticed after a few weeks that my site was on page 6 or 7 of Google so I told Google to re-index it stating that the whole site had changed. After a day or so the site appears on page 1 of Google for those keywords! Yay I thought! Then two days later it drops to like page 3/4 even though I have not touched it!
I thought this was weird and noticed the cached page was the older site, so I told Google to re-index it again. Same thing happened. After a day it's back on page 1 but higher up. It stayed there for two days and now it's on page 3/4 again!
I do have a page of 'affiliates' which are reciprocal links for directory listings. Not too many though.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Is this normal and do I need to be more patient?
I don't know whether the page loading time is affecting it or the affiliates page? It's a mystery at the moment! One that maybe you can help me solve?
Surely this is not a Panda/Penguin update issue?
Any advice or guidance would be very gratefully received as this is driving me mad. Many thanks in advance.
