Greetings lads,
I'm a big fan of ambient music. The idea of having a soundtrack playing to your life is very appealing to a lot of folks and that's why there's a large market on places like youtube. Type 'ambient music' into YT and you'll be greeted by page after page of multi-million-view titles such as "10 hours of relaxing piano music", often consisting of a 20 minute loop playing ad nauseam over a forest background for the length of the video. As I said, these videos rake in not only a lot of views, but a LOT of watch time. If you've spent any degree of time on Youtube you know what I'm talking about.
Well let me get to the point: I want to start such a YT channel. I'm branching out into the YT market as it is for various reasons, and this seems like a decent and fairly easy way to grow a channel and figure out analytics without much work. The only real hangup however is of course monetization, this is a Making Money thread after all. Due to YT's strict copyright and monetization regulations, simply copying and pasting other's music usually won't result in channel monetization. So how do we solve this problem?
The three ways I see going about it are as follows (in rising difficulty):
1. (EASY) The Affiliate Method
- Reupload copyright-free/public domain music on loop or on a playlist for 'x' number of hours.
- Have some sort of appealing video background (static or moving).
- Post affiliate links in video description.
2. (MEDIUM) The Website Method
- Same as number one, except also creating a website to reupload said videos to and make it like a relaxation blog.
- Run ads on that website as well as keeping affiliate links on original YT videos.
3. (HARD) The Production Method
- Do the same as 1 and 2, except produce your own original music.
- Since it's original music, the videos can be monetized AND you can garner a musical fanbase which can obviously lead to many more options.
-It does require musical knowledge, time, and patience however.
I'm sure there's plenty of other ways such a model could be monetized, but these were the simplest I could think of. The idea is not to make this a full time hustle, but something to build over a few weeks until it can bring in some decent passive income. It's pretty easy to crank out a month's worth of videos in a couple hours if you're using other people's music, but then you have to really double down on linking viewers to external things. Personally, I have a background in music production, so I'm going to make one channel with the reupload method and one channel with my own compositions to see which does better.
I'll report back later with my findings. In the mean time, if you have any suggestions or opinions, make sure to leave a comment below! I thank you for reading this and hope it could maybe inspire somebody else to do the same.
