Thanks. Really good info. How about the backlinks you get from press releases? There is a fresh new free list at: internetmarketingservicessite.com/press-release-submission-list.html It is really surprising how many websites offer free press release submissions and many of them offer your press releases in different places. Am going to use some of your info as it is superior compared to what I have seen on the net. Thank you again.
Have a question. I have never used a blog and only basically understand a static website so can you clarify what you mean by faking an RSS fee and randomize it? Everytime I see a blog I wonder how you would manage to get a regular website put there when I don't have another blog to list which is what they seem to request. Thank you for your help.
Just thought I'd share with you one of the things I use to easily find keyword releated backlinks which invite backlinks or exchanging links. I use google search and enter in the search bar: Page: " my chosen keyword + add link or addlink or add website " (remove spaces after the first " and before the last " This brings up all kinds of sites seeking to allowing you to add your website so no rejections as a rule. Thank you for the opportunity to share this with you. You have some great things I haven't tried yet though. I have used the .gov, edu, etc. with guestbooks and addlinks. It is surprising what you can come up with using a bit of creativity.
I was just going to use your free edu Blog link but the link says it is broken. Is there a replacement for it? Thank you so much!

This is great info, thanks Harro. Some other things to consider would be back-links from video submissions and pad submissions.
Another great site is Yahoo answers, just Google "Yahoo answers *your niche*" and start answering some questions there. You can also subscribe to Google alerts for your niche which will give you a daily list of blog posts and conversations which you can respond to.

Question about backlinks. Does google care whether its plain text or does the backlink have to be a standard html backlink?

I just bought a technique to receive some high quality back links from niche related sites. I paid $10 for it, and actually I'm not so happy with the value this technique has for $10, so this is my way of saying thanks to the guy
It's still useful so here it is:
This technique is a variation of the old award-call-home technique. It takes a little more work, but is more likely to be successful, and the outcome is pretty much the same. I call this the "Mutual Admiration Society" technique, aka MAS technique.
First of all, if you don't have a blog or section with articles on your website, create a blog or a section with articles.
However, having an articles section or blog isn't enough. You do not want to start this technique with an empty blog or article section.
Populate the section with a few quality posts (you can find good articles at article directories). The articles don't necessarily have to be unique, but they have to be good and relevant to your niche. Of course, ideally, you'd have written them yourself.
You need about half a dozen, at least, to make it look as if the blog or articles have been around for a while.
Second, scour the web for 10 or 12 sites in your niche or verticle which you admire.
1. They must be actively updated (i.e. the owner or administrator is regularly adding new content to the site).
2. They must have some way of contacting the owner on the site. Some sites do not offer any means of contacting the owner. Skip these. Also skip sites where you have to sign up, or join a newsletter. You want a straightforward contact form or email address.
3. Do not include too many elite sites with PR7 or higher. Most of the sites on your list should have a PR of about 3 ~ 5.
Third, write an article extolling the virtues of these sites. For example, if your niche is shoe polish, you could write an article entitled "10 Best Looking Sites in the Shoe Polish Industry."
The article doesn't have to be about web design. It can be "Most Influential" or "Coolest" or "Most Useful" etc. The sites targetted can be regular websites, blogs, or forums.
The article will have a simple structure: just 10 or 12 paragraphs, each about a site and why it rocks.
For best results, hire a professional copywriter to do the article.
Fourth, publish this article on your own website or blog.
Fifth, email "courtesy" notes to each of the sites featured in the article: "Hi, this is a courtesy note to inform you that we admired your site [NAME OF SITE] and featured it in our latest article [NAME OF ARTICLE AND LINK OF ARTICLE]. Do keep up the good work.
Do NOT ask for a link back, or talk about your own site. Just send a rushed note (a note that seems rushed) to politely let the site owner know that his/her site was featured in the article.
The site owner will be proud and happy to have been featured, and (hopefully) blog about it, or post a note about it. Most bloggers are starved for material.
If you're very lucky, the best link will be a permanent **************** on the front page, and you may get as many as 5 links per article. Sometimes, you may get a link alongside media powerhouses (such as the New York Times) which also featured the site.
Even if the results aren't that awesome every time, you should still get a couple of good links out of every article. And you can use this technique again and again, featuring a different set of sites every time.
Of course, the links are reciprocal - but the efficacy of this technique is far above a "let's exchange links" request (which nowadays is rightly ignored more often than not), and in most cases the links won't be buried under "Links" or "Partners" as is the case with reciprocal links.
It's still useful so here it is:

does it still count as a link if you post a comment but you only link to your site through your name and don't put any anchor text links in the comment area? Is it still worth it or do the search engines only care about anchor text links in the comment area?

It has lesser value than a backlink with anchor text. But it still counts, and it's good to have a variation of backlinks anyway to make your backlinks look more legit for Google.
