Air purifier for apartment?

@Zwielicht - is a Wikipedia of knowledge when it comes to air purification.

I'm not sure if he is working yet today but should he see this, and has time to share, be sure to have 3 notepads, 4 pens and half a dozen cups of coffee at your disposal as he knows his stuff.

Oh cool. Thats awesome. I need to be schooled.

Situation is simple. I live in the city. Not too polluted, there is some green around me, but not too much.

Apartment 54 square meters. 3 rooms + hall + bathroom.

I smoke everywhere exept in one of the rooms (the bedroom). But of course not a lot of smoking happening in the bathroom and hall either. In fact, i mostly spend my days and smoke in my work room. About 15-20 square meters room.

So the question is, yay or nay on an air purifier?

If yay, then what kind?

Ok waiting for professor then... :D

Every few days i see an ad for an air purifier, and i always wonder if theyre any good for an apartment. Health reasons.

Im not asking about the specific one in the link above. I just give the link as an example.

What do you guys think?

Next thing you know you'll be asking about gluten intolerance or pollen allergies. Then you'll want to be a vegan )))

Want fresh air, open a window. Smoke outside the window. Get a plant or two.
 
I wanted to buy air purification before. Especially when I left the hospital because I had an issue breathing because of Covid-19 (I was hospitalized in intensive care).
After thinking for some time, I decided not to buy it. The reason why I decided not to buy it is that if I use air purification, I will live in a sterile environment, but when I exit outside, I would be more vulnerable than before.
Maybe I'm wrong about this, but that's my thoughts.

No, I will not stop.

I could ask about gluten intolerance. It's on the table.

I will not ask about pollen allergies. I have no allergies. None. Not a single one.

I could be a vegan. But I believe in balance. Also life is too short. And also I have trouble eating to begin with, and cutting the things that I allow myself to eat down to a bare minimum could mean I end up eating even less than I do now. Not good = starvation = death.

Sometimes I don't wanna open a window when it's -20 degrees outside. You freeze your balls off, I don't wanna.

Smoke outside the window? You gonna come to my house and kick me out so I can have a smoke? How dare you! You better bring your own army pal :D

Plants are a possibility. But I don't like the maintenance, and the loss of space. But it's on the table for sure, plants are cool.

Yeah I'm with you on that, but I do other things to counter-act the sterility.

If I drop food on the floor, I pick it up and eat it. Unless I dropped it in shit.

If I drop a cigarette, at an airport, I pick it up and smoke it.

Sometimes I may not shower for 3-4 days. Granted, I don't do any physical work or activities, but still.

Sometimes I may not clean my apartment for even a month. And a good deep clean of every corner, even up to 3 months.

I go outside, I inhale smog and dirt and whatever crap is in the air, car pollution, gasses, etc.

So I think any measures I take to live "healthy" and "sterile" at home is balanced out by the rest of my choices in life, and by just life and things that I can't control.
 
Getting an air purifier was originally my wife's idea. I've mentioned this before, but I have bad asthma from some lung damage years ago and I used to need to use a rescue inhaler multiple times a day along with a preventer inhaler once a day.

I use air purifiers around my house in conjunction with a whole house HEPA filter. Whilst the area I live in is nice, the air quality isn't the greatest and the dust from living in the desert doesn't help. Let's also not forget about the number of pets we have in the house as well.

Since getting an air purifier, I've noticed a massive difference in my breathing. To be more specific, it's been 2 years since I've needed my inhaler, and after cleaning the filter cartridges for the air purifier, I can see why.

If you're going to get one, keep in mind that your reason for getting one will determine what kind of filter you need. If you want to remove dust, pollen, and larger particulates in the air, you should get a HEPA filter. If your goal is to remove smoke and gases, an activated carbon filter is better. Personally, I've found my HEPA filters still remove odours fairly well, though.

My bird's vet actually recommended getting an air purifier with a UV-C light to reduce the chances of my bird catching my wife's bird's disease. This might be overkill for you, but it's another thing to look into.

When you're looking into getting one, check the reviews to make sure it's a true HEPA filter and not a HEPA-type filter. Additionally, there are a lot of units that look similar but they have different brand names. I haven't test these for quality, but it's just something else to be aware of.

Personally, I've found the smaller desktop-sized air purifiers you find on Amazon work well for a whole bedroom, although my larger unit moves more air through it per hour. When you're looking at a product, see if it mentions the air exchange rate per hour or what size room it's recommended for before purchasing.

I got a Honeywell HEPA air purifier in the bedroom and a Germ Guardian for the man cave/office, happy with both except for the noise when on the highest setting.

If people with allergies like myself listen to you, we'd be in trouble.

When you don't know what you're talking about, maybe, just maybe don't comment on a subject.

Well, excuse me miss.

The reply was more in a sense to man up, which is obviously not your case. Allergies are real, and it's been 3 weeks since I'm battling pollen and a clogged nose+tears all day.

However, in my own personal experience, air purifiers like those advertised above will only make things worse. It's fun and games the first two weeks before all bunch of shit gets trapped in the filters. Then it's worse than before. Then there's legionella too.

But yeah, anyway, if you really have allergies, try some self-induced adrenaline 5-10 minutes a day by hyperventilating. It helps a great deal.
 
An air purifier isn't going to save you if you smoke anyway
Get a humidifier instead
 
this is a very cool thing for the house!!! I too smoke in the house and I need to buy a purifier .
 
I wouldn't buy a cheap air purifier, I would choose, for example, IQAir HealthPro 250, because this device really does its job, such devices are used in hospitals, but it's quite bulky. I gifted it to a friend, and he says that now he has no problems with a runny nose.
 
I personally don't smoke but I used to have an air purifier in my previous home and the air quality seemed to be better (I mainly got it so I can get rid of the dust in my room and the filter was full after a few months so I'm sure it did it's job).

I definitely say yay. I have so many. If you live in the city, you need one. Even if you live in the country, I'd recommend it. VOCs are no joke.
