Adsense Challenge to $5 / day

This is the first post of the series Yet Another Challenge(YAC): Adsense. It has been a long time since I did some internet marketing, but I'm back in the game. So I want to start small again and scale it up. My goal for this case study is to reach $5 / day in 5 months of time with adsense and possibly some affiliate marketing. I'm hoping I will hit it earlier, but I will probably not have much time in the coming 5 months.

You may be asking yourself: Why do I start a case study? It's mostly to motivate me, because if I say in a post I will do that, I will make sure I do that. Also I would like to give back what I learn. I will not put ads on Case Studies on my blog as this would make it seem I'm doing this case study to make money.

Some background

I am not totally new to IM. I have previous experience in Internet Marketing and know about SEO, wordpress, web development. Last year I made around $200 - $300 / month for 2 months by promoting CPA rebills on a blog and some PPC, I regret promoting them. After I found out of the fraud involved in this I got a bad conscience and stopped promoting them. One of the reasons I quit internet marketing for about 1 year now, my current income == $0 / month. So this is going to be my comeback with websites I can be proud of!

So what has been done?

I got a domain with a 3 words long keyword in it, without any hyphens: keyword.com. I created a WordPress blog yesterday, which contains a single post without much content. The blog has been indexed already and is now ranking at spot: #17 on Google. I'm guessing this is, because it is an old domain, which already got backlinks before.

What will I do now?

Create 7 high quality articles for next week and publish one everyday. Do some SEO, but not too many. Every article I will social bookmark in the hope of gaining exposure and for the SEO benefits. For this website I will use the take it easy to approach to prevent sandboxing and relax haha. Take it easy is always the best, for me

I hope somebody will follow my case study, if you do it would motivate me if you place a simple comment or leave a message on the forum from time to time, so I know I'm not doing this for nothing. Also any tips are welcome! I hope next week or in some days I can show off with some statistics ^^

I decided to go legit myself a few weeks back so i researched a keyword and subscribed to Angela's links and got it on page one in less than 3 weeks and i now make between $5-7 daily. I'll start more here soon but good luck in your endeavor man.

Nice, that's good to hear. I used angelas before, but I never bought the package normally I just search what links the guy #1 for a really competitive term is using and I use those links. Simple and effective.

I didn't do any SEO yet, and I'm not sure yet if I will do too many. I will first try with a little social bookmarking and blog commenting. If my rankings still won't get high enough I will start using High PR profile backlinks, such as Angelas package.

Really great to see people will follow this! Thanks, it will motivate me for sure. And for the people who are doing the same thing I would love to hear your stories too. I'm planning on showing the domain also, but not sure if I will do that public. Scared that somebody will click my adsense ads too many and get banned.

I will update this in a few days already if something happens and what I'm doing. I will try to be more detailed if people would prefer that.

Well good luck, it's definitely do-able. I somehow reached this with one site in the insurance niche. Plenty of unsuccessful sites before hand. If I can do it, you can certainly do it!

Remember when you reach $5, don't relax, because your challenge is then to scale up!

Yea I know. I will definitely scale up. The problem is my limited time in 2 weeks I will go to China for 5 months and write my thesis. But it's not in my character to stop after I reach $5 to stop haha. My next goal is to make a living of it in China, so I will need around $600 / month.


Update: I'm going to write another article today for the homepage. And post 5 blog comments on related software blogs. I'm in the software niche, but I took a really small niche.

These are the searches for my main keyword:
Global: 3,600
Local monthly US: 1,600

But I think I can rank well for some other keywords also. And for my main keyword it will be easy to rank #1, as I have the exact match.com domain. Saw that the competition was not that hard to beat.

Maybe 3,600 every month is not enough for making $5 / day, but by putting in some other keywords I hope I can get enough traffic. Any opinions on this?

I once did almost 7 dollars in one day (adsense only), but it is usually 0.5-1 dollar/day. But i need to get more visitors. I will follow this thread...

I hear ya, I use seoquake and find the top sites in my niches as well and pull the high pr links from them.

**UPDATE**
It has been a little more than a week, but not without results. Today I got my first positive results!! Really happy I made some money again. It's not much though, but I have a feeling I will reach $5 / day sooner than expected. After 4 days I didn't want to do anything, luckily today I got motivated again by the $$. It really feels good to get some earnings after you work on a website.

What did I do this week?

I added 1 affiliate offer to the homepage it's a software product from Regnow Affiliate network. I get $12 for every customer that buys the software after the free trial. (This is not a CPA free trial, as i told you I don't do those anymore. Its a software product which you can try for 30 days before you buy.)

I also wrote 3 articles, 1 for the home page and the other 2 for some keywords that also get around 3k searches a month with a CPC of $4 and the other one with a CPC of $13. But I guess I will never get that amount right?

I also found writing articles is a really boring proces, but buying articles will get you really bad articles.. I tried it twice, from "native americans" but the article read like it was written buy an indian, even I could see many mistakes in grammar and I am not a native english speaker... What do you guys do for getting high quality content? I am in no position to buy this yet, but just curious.

On my homepage I am reviewing various software of the niche and I put the software, which gives me a $12 commision as first. It is also pretty good software, but still was not sure if I should put it at spot 1 or not.

I did nearly no SEO, but amazingly my website is ranking quite well already for main keyword, because it is an old exact match domain (I got the whole keyword.com). Also the old backlinks seems to work pretty well. I saw there were still some blog comments from last year.

What are the statistics?

My rankings on google are:
main keyword ($4 cpc): #4
$14 cpc keyword: #25, ranking with my domain not with the article itself
$4 cpc keyword: #63, ranking with my domain not with the article itself

Since I hit the #4 spot my visitors went really high as you can see on analytics: seems i cant, post the image here, but I also post all these updates on my blog with images in my sig, there are absolutely no ads on my blog! Hope this is ok with the forum rules?

There is one problem though I am having a really high bounce rate. So does anyone have a suggestion how to reduce the bounce rate? I am guessing Google will use this data for their SERPS maybe?

Because of the increased visitors since ranking #4 on February 1. I also got my first money again. The feeling to see you got a commission is really great!

My adsense statistics are ~84 views, 1 click, ~1% CTR, $0,80 should I try some different ad formats? Maybe it is because people in software niche are not likely to click on advertisements?

Affiliate statistics, well I got $12 today for 1 commision, but I am not sure if this was a lucky shot that happens 1/1000 or if this will be more. I am hoping that this will happen everyday now ofcourse, but I think not. I didn't even expect anybody would buy the software at first, as there are also free alternatives, but it seems people prefer to buy things, because they think if you buy something it must be better I guess?

What will I do now?

I should really update the text on my homepage so I will get a higher conversion rate and more people downloading the software. I should also try to find the motivation to write. I am not a good writer and I don't like writing about software.. even although I am a programmer. Next website will be a niche i like to write about. How do you guys find motivation to write? I am from Holland, so my english is also not super good, but I heard this is actually a good thing according to: oh cant post links . He said it is best to write as simple as possible, so everybody understands it.

I will also wait for 1 week with SEO and than do little seo for every article. Like 1 back link a day or 1 every week.

Do you have any suggestions what is the best to do next? I also noticed I have a much easier time writing an article like this of more than 700 words than writing a small article for the software website...

I am on the same boat as you! Except I'm getting 1-3 visitors a day with 0-1 click a day, which comes out to around 50cents a day. Would be great if I could bring up my traffic since it seems like my CTR is good.

First off, I'm not sure what template you are using, but make sure it's not one of the really popular adsense templates, I have had a number of sites get de-indexed from google that use these templates.

2nd, I hate writing too, I find the best way to write is to follow a set article formula, such as "5 things you never knew about..." or "the pros and cons of...". List articles are always easy to write.

Just my two cents.

Its off topic, but cannot resist myself from making this post... Even I am not that good in English, but surely there are high quality writers in India.
Articles from Indians doesn't mean that they are of low quality. I don't know why people are going so fancy these days .... which ever forum i go, i see posts like "its an Indian article", "it seems like you got this work done from an Indian....."
Indian = low quality.... if the work is of low quality, people just judge that its done by an Indian.... and later they will come to know that its done by some X person belonging to some X country...

Thanks, yea I already have one article which is Softare Review- The pros and cons. But I also think they are more easy to write and makes it more fun for the reader.

I am not using any "adsense templates" as I also don't think they look good. I use the Lightword theme of wordpress, it's a really popular theme.

Ah hehe seems I offended indians with this post. This is not what I meant. Sorry for that. It's just a general term, because there are many indian writers. Yea actually I think an indian writer is better than pakistan or some other country, because I heard many people speak english in India also in daily life. I think I should pay more money to a quality writer if I will outsource this. Last time I paid $3 an article of 400 words. I think if I start working with article writers I wanna hire them and not pay a rate. I should go to India if I have enough money and set a team together.

There are also some americans, who's english is not even good haha, and it is their primary language. Also no offense to americans.
I mean in Holland we also have many people who don't speak or write dutch well and it is also our main language, but we can still understand each other well.

I will have a look, but I am normally not so found of "Adsense" themes. It's $70, but probably can get it here somewhere ^^ I just changed some colors today and the position. I am only having 1 ad block which is a 120x600 at the left side of the content. With Float:left;

I had a dream last night I bought a copywriter for an article it was quite expensive but I made $1,3k in 1 day, because it was high quality many people give it backlinks and it come on #1 on google and on Digg etc.. When I woke up I still thought it was true for some mins, too bad it wasn't

Here you go, guaranteed $5/day xD. No more complaining how you can't make even $1 . :-D
