Ads in Open directories

I wanted to make an open directory that contains files for people to download. But from what i read online one has to edit the header and footer of the directory to make it contain ads. And to do this one has to the edit the .HTaccess file. Does any one have any free hosts that allow editing the .htaccess file? And is any one familiar with this method on how to edit the HTaccess file to show ads?
