Let me start off by saying that I have used this technique a lot, including for one article that I wrote 6 months ago. It has brought me $6000 in sales since then, and still continues to do so as I rank first for a range of keywords that my article is addressing. Not too bad for a day of work.
Before I start, I want to say that this works for easy and medium-to-rank keywords only. I prefer to rank for such keywords, because 1) it shows that you do not follow the most obvious route that everyone is taking 2) you do not have to invest a lot for backlinks, and 3) it is usually something very specific, which is usually much easier to convert into a sale.
Getting started
So you have a website/landing page where you are selling a product or service.
Let us say you are selling a hair-loss prevention shampoo called OmegaHair on omegahair.com. You are picking out keywords that you want to rank, and instinctively you pick the most obvious ones, which are:
1) shampoo against hair loss
2) hair loss prevention shampoo
3) shampoo against balding
4) stop balding shampoo
Now some of these keywords, your website omegahair.com might be targeting already like as follows:
OmegaHair - The Best Shampoo Against Hairloss
That is great. But just in itself, your website is not effective because:
1) You yourself are claiming you have the best shampoo, and almost nobody is going to believe that.
2) You are not targeting keywords within your niche at its full potential with just this keyword.
People have to be convinced your product is the best product against hairloss before they enter your website, because, believe it or not, you lose credibility about whatever you say about your own product.
You need to do it externally from your own website, and that is why you need to make a completely different website. That is where the real money is. A website that talks about shampoos against hairloss, and which one promotes you as being the best one. For example, in this case, hairlossexpert.com.
Picking out the keywords
Now before you start writing articles on your different website, you to pick out keywords where you feel that you have really exhausted the potential of your reach on Google. Now we have talked about:
1) shampoo against hair loss
2) hair loss prevention shampoo
3) shampoo against balding
4) stop balding shampoo
Despite it being obvious, these are good keywords that you should definitely rank for. I use Google Adword´s keyword planner tool to see how many times these keywords get searched, and usually they will suggest some really good ones that I will include in my list
To rank for these keywords, I actually use the list format and do:
Best *keyword*
Top 10 *keyword*
Most effective *keyword*
So, as an example, if I want to rank for shampoo against hair loss, I would write an article called 10 Best Shampoo Against Hair Loss and in the description I would write that it is scientifically proven or whatever.
But that is not it. I will also try to think of keywords that are not that obvious, that could still lead to a sale like:
How to slow down hairloss (I would list several methods, including using shampoo, which then links directly to OmegaHair)
Natural ways to prevent baldness
Shampoo for thinning hair
Hair recovery shampoo
Etc. You can usually think of another 20+ keywords with the help of Google keyword planner.
Writing the articles
There is a strict format I follow to write these articles:
1) Must be a list. Start with Nr. 10 (e.g. Nr. 10 - ThickyHair Shampoo) and include a photo of the product, in this case the shampoo.
2) Must must be natively written.
3) At least 1500.
4) Many subheadings, easy to read and with plenty of images.
For all these list articles, you put OmegaHair on first place, and you state clear as to why it is the best. You can even sign up with affiliates for the other 9 shampoos because sometimes people will buy from your competitors. This is normal and should not bother you.
I have noticed this format works really well to get to the first page on Google with no or a few backlinks. Once you have published it, give it a few weeks. I use Serpbook.com to track my rankings.
Building backlinks
Competitor´s backlinks
I have competitors, and they are not stupid. I will to take full advantage of that by checking their backlink profile and noting down the links that I can replicate as well for free.
Forums
Then I will find each and every forum that talks about hair loss, get registered, and promote not OmegaHair but my Hairlossexpert.com website. Not only does that drive traffic to my website, it also improves the metrics of hairlossexpert.com, which consequently improves it of omegahair.com if you have the right linking structure.
Other
I will also look into Reddit.com, Yahoo Answers and Quora. In Quora, for example, there might be a lad asking
Help. I am losing hair. What can I do?
And you hit them with your hairlossexpert.com website.
Reddit, Yahoo Answers, and Quora are all great sources for real traffic and conver well.
Post-Analysis
Once I have let the articles index for a few weeks and build free backlinks, I check my rankings. Now remember that since hairlossexpert.com is still a fresh domain, you might not yet be where you want to be in ranks, but you certainly will be over the course of a few months if you keep writing and keep building free backlinks.
I would not mind answering any questions that you might have.
