It ain't binary. IM is great, 9-5 is great as well.

Depends on what you want in life I guess... Job security? Sure get a 9-5.

I'm also trying to make a business out of mobile apps/games - I already have like 2-3 years of experience now. I didn't made any money still and it's indeed very hard and discouraging but I fight for it.

The internet offers us opportunities and we must take advantage of them

Actually, if you stop messing with all the blackhat crap, start your own business/blog/channel, and create quality content (this is if you're english speaker I don't know about other languages)

I'd bet within 3 years of constant content creation plus networking in your niche and doing guest posting/guest appearances on channels and podcasts, stuff like that,

You probably only need to work a few hours a week for the rest of your life in order to make a 6 figure living.

Get out of your head, stop procrastinating, and let's make this really targeted content using keyword research. Then outreach. It's so simple. 9-5 is a dead end guys, c'mon now.

I don't understand why you guys are always saying that you are like a slave...

Man... when you do IM, you are a slave to your customers, you depend on them buying your stuff or reading your things.

If you do SEO you are a slave to google and his perception of how things should be.

You also have to stick to a schedule or your life falls apart. Most people who do not have a proper schedule see their business declining fast and lose track and eventually finish in a bad place. Digital nomads are often becoming digital hobos... I don't think it's better than sticking to a job.

Not being harsh to you but having a job and nice colleagues and seeing people outside of your computer to accomplish something meaningful can really impact positively your life. And it's from someone having contracts with nonprofits, I can tell you it's a joy to do something meaningful and seeing donors actually giving you money for a good cause, sometimes more fulfilling than having my own side business on the side.

Not all jobs are meant to be slavery, a job in the first place is for you to add a value in someone else's dream yes, not your dream per say but if you find a good job that is meaningful, you can sense a lot of satisfaction, different from IM but laughs between colleagues are a very good thing to experiment.

I worked 13 years in Cyber Security, contracted within the Data Loss Prevention space for some of the biggest financial firms in the world. I make far more from IM than I did from my corporate job. Plus I don't need to wear pants.
 
How about doing both if you can? ;) I know plenty people working a $120k/yr job and have a $100k+ side business.

Because most jobs are High-stress and the employees have little to no freedom. Because most of the time you are Overworked and Underpaid while your boss has a fat ass salary.
At my job I'm not allowed to wear a beard...or to wear patched jeans...or printed T-shirts... or have tattoo.... or....etc.
We, as people, want to at least feel in control. Because is our life. If we don't care about that then we can go join the army lol.

You're absolutely right, Willyfish. Having a schedule is a good thing, but you can make your own schedule without the need of having a 9 to 5.

You are not being harsh, I agree with you but some of us are introverted and feel better alone. Giving money for a good cause it's a good thing and if we have money, we all have to do a good deed from time to time.

Let's be honest here, that's very hard. In most jobs you are there only to make someone else rich and happy, while they don't give a f about you.
It's like I say: IF you find your soulmate.
