800+ links overnight from "last comment widget" got me in trouble?

What the hell? I posted a blog comment on a blog with a PR 2 for the domain and a PR 1 for the page I blog posted. All cool till then.

It so happens this blog, which is on the topic of SEO and looks a bit spammy, has the " last visitor comments" widget enabled (I didn't see this). I went overnight from having 300 backlinks on Webmasters Tools (all created naturally and mostly white hat) to having 1000+, with over 800+ coming from this site as my comment is on every page of the freaking site (in the 5 last comments box).

I might be a bit paranoid but my rankings seem to have suffered, especially for the more competitive keywords. On Traffic Travis my site has a PR 3 but Page Authority is 0 for my domain name (I used my domain as the link when I blog commented on this blog). For the record, my Page Authority used to be 20. The Page Authority and PR of the rest of my pages remain unaffected.

Now, would the fact that I had 800+ same backlinks from the same webpage have tipped off Google and I am being penalized? The blogsite where I posted my comment (a customized comment, not spam) looks a bit fishy but I posted on a page that had a good article and no comments (PR of this page was 1).

My intention was to have ONE backlink from this site from the page I blog commented, not 800+ backlinks. So basically, you fellas think I am being penalized for the abrupt increase in backlinks? Would not Google have notified me through WMT since it is a backlink that potentially would have been posted by someone else and affected me?

Thanks

Why are you doing blog commenting to your money site? :eek:mfg:

What are you talking about? Manual blog commenting to your site is fine, and good for diversity. Scrapeboxing your site? Maybe not, differing views on this.

OP -- This is normal.

Because it is alright to do non-spammy legit blog commenting on high quality pages/sites

I am still learning SEO and while my site (blog) was supposed to be the one I would build myself around, it has taken a lot of experimental hits due to my noobness in SEO.

I do believe that legitimate blog commenting is a good way to at least get some backlinks and a bit of traffic. For the record, most of the time I check the PR of the page I am about to comment and avoid posting on spammy looking sites.

The blog page that I commented on was one with a PR 1 and which I researched prior to posting my comment. I didn't even see the 5 last comments widget but even if I saw it, I would not have understood the implications of having 800+ backlinks all coming from the site overnight.

Feel free to let know if you think blog commenting with one's money site is not optimal. Likewise if those 800+ backlinks would have raised an alarm with Google.

Don't panic to much but make sure that you continue to build links to the site, you might have raised a flag with Google but ride it out

This is what happened when I tested out that plugin a few weeks ago

Thanks for contributing but I don't understand the graph implication. Is that graph response because you did the same as me and posted in a blog/site with the "last comments" widget/plugin enabled, thus your keyword ranking fell dramatically? If so, how did you get it back up again? Did Google ameliorate the penalty as time went by?

Lastly, I am considering posting 5 comments on the blog with other links (not to my blog) to get my link out of that widget.
