The platforms exacerbated anxiety and depression, deprived them of sleep, exposed them to bullying and created worries about their body image and “FOMO” (“fear of missing out”). Academic studies have found that these problems tend to be particularly severe among frequent users.

Nearly 63% of Instagram users report being miserable, a higher share than for any other social network. They spend an average of nearly an hour per day on the app. The 37% who are happy spend on average just over half as long.

People that are miserable use these platforms to escape life, I wonder how it would look like if they take the same study but towards video games and mobile games. Happy people have too much to do then to sit around on IG or FB all day wasting whatever time they have left on this planet. I'm pretty social and going around trying to talk to some people highlights the level of social skills they have, if any. I think it's really creating a greater divide in people, either one extreme or the other. It's that people are either really social or just a disaster when talking to others. Most people are loosing touch with human interaction. People are scared to call a store to order a pizza because they don't want to talk to the person on the phone so they just place the order online, which usually takes twice as long. I think I spend maybe an hour a week on IG and FB combined, if that. Really just to find events around me to go to or stay in touch with people I know. I don't know why anyone else would want to spend anymore time on it, and people thought that TV rots your brain.

I think most people are miserable because they are consumers and not producers. They don't add real value in this world, they only consume the value others have created.

"How heavy use of social media is linked to mental illness" by THE DATA TEAM

wow! they sound like a well educated group of experts!

this article is on par with those "psych tests" found in tabloids.

does instagram make people miserable? or were they that way before they went to instagram, probably for a quick cheer up?

yesterday i read part of an article warning about cellphone addiction ... it's always something!

It does not say that IG makes you miserable. But that higher IG users are more miserable. It is more to do with who they are rather than IG making them depressed.

However, reality just seems so dull when compared to those fantasy photos with perfectly doctored images of themselves only when they are having fun (nobody takes photos when they are having a randomly dull moment- extremely dull moment yes, but not most waking hours).

Young people will be even more suicidal once that a global rating app comes along. Once they see that they are a 2.75 out of 5 they will be reaching out for the wrists with a razor.

Most people are averagely OK, averagely pretty, averagely sexy and ....well, average in general.

IG encourages us to celebrate the exceptional while being entirely untrue (with doctored photos and set up 'shoots').

Things will only get worse. We need to kick those celebrity asses to space and just get on with our 'real' lives.

Thr most followed accounts on IG are that of sexy girls, models and celebrities then I wonder how people tend to get depressed or sad? Is it their jealousy or failure or something else that makes them feel depressed?

Its because everything is glorified, made to look easy on ig (getting famous, rich, girls etc...), and when others try to repeat they dont get the same results. Because they dont know the secret(s).
