I think op is talking about renting a small room and living like a local. Unfortunately it does not work this way in Vietnam. Firstly op need to solve the visa issue. Vietnam government do not welcome cheap foreigners into the country. So op need a legit employment status to stay in Vietnam.
Next there is a recent law that forces foreigners to contribute to social insurance else visa will not be approved.
Then we have local police issue, if you stay in those cheap accommodation you would have police conducting spot check in the wee hours of the night. If you happen to be white, be prepared for additional problem as they would expect coffee money.
I just went to vietnam and stayed there for month and not working. I can apply for a new travel visa each month for 15 usd. And we never had a problem with the cops staying there but maybe you are right but
