Hi all- I have been working on optimizing our businesses local SEO quite a bit! For content, it's my wife's dental practice! Here are 5 things that I learnt the hard way! Sharing so that hopefully it helps others except our competitors in our area hopefully :P

Google Business Profile activity matters more than people admit: Almost every high-impact suggestion came back to the same thing: touch your GBP regularly. Add a photo, reply to a review, update hours, answer a question. These tiny actions send strong "this business is active" signals to Google and compound over time.

Reviews beat almost everything else at the local level: Asking one happy customer for a review does more than most technical tweaks. Not just collecting them- responding like a human matters. Consistent, recent reviews influence rankings and conversion far more than people want to believe.

Low-hanging keywords are hiding in plain sight: Google Search Console is full of local opportunities: keywords ranking in positions 5–20 that just need better content or minor optimization. You can even automate most of this using AI tools like Frizerly these days!

NAP consistency is boring, but unforgiving: Mismatched name, address, or phone number across GBP, website, and citations quietly kills trust. It’s not sexy, but fixing inconsistencies is one of the fastest ways to stop leaking local visibility.

Local SEO is no longer “just Google”: Engaging where locals already hang out (Facebook groups, Nextdoor, community forums) keeps coming up for a reason. Recommendations, mentions, and real-world engagement feed trust- and trust is increasingly what local SEO runs on. These mentions are also super helpful for showing on AI overview, and ChatGPT etc! You no longer need direct links but even brand mentions count!

And that's about it! That said, curious, did I miss any important ones? Comment below.

Optimizing local SEO taught me a few key lessons. regularly updating your Google Business Profile matters more than most tweaks, reviews have huge impact on rankings and conversions, easy keyword wins hide in Search Console, NAP consistency is critical, and local SEO now extends beyond Google to community platforms and brand mentions.
Solid points, especially around GBP activity and reviews — those two alone move the needle more than most people expect.

1. Understand the Importance of Location-Based Keywords
2. Optimize Your Google Business Profile
3. Create High-Quality Local Content
4. Leverage Local Citations and Backlinks
5. Invest in Long-Term SEO Strategies

Great list. I’d add that "Local Justifications" (the 'sold here' or 'their website mentions' snippets) are huge now. Adding specific services to your GBP products section really helps trigger those for long-tail local searches.
