I've got a web design and seo services website that was ranking #2-3 for a large US market. Following the penguin data refresh, it's now at the bottom of page 2. Our link profile is very diverse, as are the anchors. The website is less than 1 year old, but PR3. I'm thinking we may have built links a bit too fast for the domain, since we aren't over-optimizing any anchors (aside from the company name). I want to buy an aged (8-10 years) domain from the same niche, use the wayback machine to put the original content on the site, then 301 it to my existing web design site. Has anyone done this before or have thoughts on the subject? I am not interested in 301ing the existing website since the drop wasn't that bad. This just seems to make sense from a legitimacy/insurance standpoint. In my mind, it should look like some kind of "company acquisition" which happens all the time.
